Love a good golf course? You are spoilt for choice when it comes to Mauritius!

Whether you are coming to Mauritius as part of a bush-and-beach break or the island is your sole vacation destination, you will relish a game of golf here – guaranteed! Mauritius boasts over a dozen courses all over the island – and one, Bernhard Langer’s Le Touessrok, is situated on its very own isle! This is the Ile aux Cerfs, a former sugar plantation off the east coast. With topography including tidal pools, mangrove forests and volcanic outcrops, the course here provides some spectacular play!

Golf on the south-west coast

The south-west coast of the island is home to the likes of Heritage Golf Club and Tamarina Golf. These, too, offer superb scenery! Designed by Peter Matkovich, the Heritage contains some wonderfully wide fairways and generous putting surfaces, many with water guards. The course is pretty challenging overall, but its five tee positions per hole cater well for the less experienced! Tamarina’s setting makes for many memorable moments – sprawling on the savanna part of the coast, the course has a dramatic backdrop including the spiky peaks of Trois Mamelles. Its architect is Rodney Wright, who well fulfilled his brief to create a true championship course and even managed to merge seamlessly into his design such natural features as Mount Rempart, the River Rempart and the Barachoise Estuary!

Golf on the east coast

Over on the east coast, there is Anahita, constructed in 2008 by Ernie Els and Ciel Properties. Like the Heritage, this course has some very wide fairways – and it really makes the most of its coast location! It has a distinctive look too, with two loops of nine, and between 2010 and 2014 it hosted the AfrAsia Golf Masters. If you like supersize, Anahita is for you, as it occupies a site of over 200 hectares!

The east coast also hosts the Belle Mare Plage (Legend) course, 25 miles from Port Louis. This is a characterful spot, a former hunting reserve chock-full of ancient trees! The woodiness of the area brings a few challenges, not least water hazards at a few of the holes, but the fairways are pretty wide and they play to greens that have recently been rebuilt according to USGA standards. The course was designed in 1994 by Hugh Baiocchi, one of South Africa’s golf champions!

There are many more courses well worth a play on Mauritius – the island might be described as the new kid on the block in golf terms, but in just a short space of time it has established itself as a fabulous golfing destination!
