With its mix of tranquil lagoons and classic surf’s-up beaches, the West Coast has something for everyone. Sunbathing, swimming, surfing, strolls… and all surrounded by spectacular scenery!

The West Coast of Mauritius is home to some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, and it contains enough variety to ensure that everyone can spend time enjoying their favorite activities! There are some gorgeous sunsets here too, the sky glowing pink, purple, gold over the lofty heights of Le Morne Brabant and the oceans darkening to violet. Unsurprisingly, the beaches of the West Coast tend to attract a lot of visitors, but it is possible to find your quiet corner for relaxing in this wonderful part of the world. There are seven brilliant beaches on the West Coast and our favorites are Flic en Flac, Le Morne Brabant and Tamarin.

The West Coast is situated between Albion and Tamarin, two picturesque villages. The name of this beach is Dutch, translating to English as ‘free and flat land’. This is also very long land, providing a lovely hour’s stroll from end to end. Colorful coral reef surrounds the beach, creating a clear blue lagoon that is perfect for bathing, swimming, and snorkeling. However, it is strongly advised that visitors wear sandals at all times, due to the presence of sea urchin – stepping on one of these spiky chaps is pretty painful! Other than that, the West Coast is a great safe beach, featuring spectacular sunsets. It can feel a bit busy at weekends, but during the week it is relatively serene and a fabulous place to be.

Le Morne

Le Morne Brabant’s beaches, on the well-known south-western peninsula, are very high quality too. They are situated on the west side of the majestic monolith, close to the area’s large resorts and hotels. The public beach is incredibly scenic, boasting white sands that are fringed by swaying palm trees and caressed by exceptionally clear seas. Thanks to excellent wind conditions throughout the year, the beach is first rate for windsurfing and kitesurfing – in fact, it is considered one of the finest destinations for these activities worldwide! Swimming is superb here too, but you do have to share your space with a lot of surfers most of the time. If you are not a surfer yourself, you might enjoy just watching all the action, while topping up your tan!

Tamarin

Lastly, there is Tamarin, on Tamarin Bay, between Black River village and Flic en Flac. With a backdrop of the Black River mountain range, this beach certainly has the wow factor. Unlike on the other beaches of Mauritius, the sands here are yellowish and contain small stones that are ideal for decorating your sandcastles! As the beach is not surrounded by coral reef, it is possible for big waves to ride all the way to shore. Swimming is not advised beyond the shallows, as sometimes there are strong currents. However, bathing is excellent and surfing is awesome. You can also walk the length of the beach, crossing the Tamarin River. Weekdays are great for finding a secluded spot for sunbathing and picnicking, while weekends are fantastic for gatherings around campfires full of people enjoying the beach vibe.
