We think Lakaz Chamarel is pretty special and we are delighted to recommend a stay here to guests looking for a retreat, somewhere away from the crowds. As it does not have a kids’ club, families with small children might well prefer a resort.

OVERVIEW:

Lakaz Chamarel is unusual for a Mauritian vacation property in that it is managed as a guesthouse yet offers all the luxury and high service standards of a 5-star hotel! We reckon this is a winning combination, in keeping with the exclusive feel of the place. Staff take a flexible approach to dining, happy for guests to set their own mealtimes, while at the bar guests are welcome to ‘be served or serve yourself’. The restaurant provides such treats as full American breakfast, light lunches and plenty of local fare. Finally, for the ultimate in relaxation, guests need venture no farther than the sauna and massage cabin, in the very center of the grounds.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Lakaz Chamarel is located at an altitude of 400m, in the mountains overlooking the south-west coast of Mauritius and approximately an hour from the airport in the South. Set within 12ha of gorgeous gardens and ringed by tropical forest, it is a refreshing alternative to the sprawling resorts that occupy the island’s coasts.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT LAKAZ CHAMAREL EXCLUSIVE LODGE:

The design of the main buildings at Lakaz Chamarel is inspired by a variety of styles – African, Indian, Far Eastern, Mauritian – and reflects the island’s own cultural melange. The dining room is home to a lovely restaurant, while guests may also relax in the lounges and bar. Meals are served on the outdoor terraces too, with spectacular views of the coast. Other facilities include a library, TV room, small shop and two swimming pools, both treated with salt from Black River Saltworks nearby.

Guest accommodation is varied in style also, with each of the 20 rooms and suites bearing a unique design. Guests choose from five options: standard or superior room, garden pool, sea view pool or exclusive suite. All suites and rooms are spacious and comfortable, featuring ceiling fan, mosquito net, bathrobes, slippers, pillow menu and Citronella essential oils. Additionally, guests benefit from a private terrace and outside showers, open to the sky. The suites boast private plunge pools too!

ACTIVITIES AT LAKAZ CHAMAREL EXCLUSIVE LODGE:

  • Activities here consist of swimming in the lodge’s pools and enjoying complimentary yoga sessions, with private classes available at extra cost.
  • From the lodge, it is possible to explore the surrounding area by foot or by bike – popular excursions include walking in the lodge’s labyrinth or to Bel Ombre an hour and a half away, climbing Piton Canot with or without a guide, discovering Black River Peak and Black River Gorges, and visiting Chamarel village and the local rum distillery and wood museum.
  • Keen birders rejoice in spotting such species as the green parrot and pink pigeon within wooded hills.
  • Additionally, beautiful beaches are just a 10–15-minute drive from Lakaz Chamarel and the lodge is able to organize waterskiing, kite-surfing and fishing, for example.
