Malawi in May

Shoulder-season May is a great time to visit Malawi, with all lake lodges open and offering a thrilling range of activities to enjoy.

What's the weather going to be like in Malawi in May?

  • Both daytime and night-time temperatures are starting to fall
  • It’s the second month of dry season
  • Temperatures are cooling a little
  • We recommend a light raincoat and lots of layers
  • The country’s higher regions can experience quite dramatic drops in temperature, but there’s relatively little variation around the lake, meaning the days stay nice and warm.

What are the highlights of visiting Malawi in May?

  • All the country’s lake lodges have re-opened, following the green-season rains
  • Rates remain lower than later in dry season, such as in June, July, and August
  • Lake visitors can get stuck in to an exhilarating variety of activities, such as diving, snorkelling, and kayaking, as well as laidback beach time
  • There are fewer mosquitoes
  • The bush-and-beach combination of Zambia and Lake Malawi is much better this month, as Zambia also experiences comfortable temperatures as well as beautiful scenery, reliable wildlife sightings, and lots of camps and lodges opening, meaning there is more from which to choose.

Any lowlights?

  • May is still very green in Zambia, and so wildlife viewing can be challenging – making a bush experience less big game orientated at this time of the year.
