Kenya in October

October

October is the last month before the short rains begin – wildlife viewing is fantastic due to dry conditions, and the herds of the Great Migration are grazing in the Maasai Mara.

What's the weather going to be like in Kenya in October?

  • Days and nights are dry and clear
  • We’re in dry season, so the likelihood of rainfall is very small
  • Temperatures are warm to very hot, but cold in the evenings
  • It’s shorts-and-tees weather, or light trousers if you prefer
  • This is the final month of the dry season, just before the short rains of November and December begin

What are the highlights of visiting Kenya in October?

  • There’s good availability of properties
  • October heralds a significant decrease in accommodation prices
  • The dry season is fantastic for viewing wildlife
  • There are very few mosquitoes about
  • The huge herds of the Great Migration have just left the Maasai Mara National Reserve – if you’re set on seeing them, we recommend staying in the south-east of the Maasai Mara or the north-east of the Serengeti
  • Wildlife gathers around scarce water sources in the parks and reserves
  • Vast numbers of migratory birds start flying in from Europe – the north region of Amboseli National Park and the western side of Lake Nakuru are particularly brilliant for birders
  • January and February are considered best for a beach holiday in Kenya, but October is excellent for exploring reefs – and the diving and snorkeling season resumes this month
  • Impressive concentrations of wildlife around waterholes make for fantastic photo opportunities, and there are gorgeous sunsets from the beaches of Funzi Keys Island

Any Lowlights?

  • Towards the end of the month, the short-rains season might bring occasional rainfall, typically showers in the afternoon
  • Coastal areas can be affected by the south-easterly monsoon
