"Competition to Elsa's and a property that offers high levels of comfort along with all the activities you'd expect while staying in Meru. Overall, a very nice camp, but one with stiff competition."

OVERVIEW:

Rhino River Camp is one of the best camps with access to Meru National Park! There really is a lot to do here – and also a lot not to do, for the times travelers prefer simply to relax and hang out in their zen hut. Fab location and amazing activities – an all-rounder!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

It is also close to Meru National Park, specifically to one of the gates leading into the area containing the park’s rhino sanctuary.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT RHINO RIVER CAMP:

Rhino River Camp occupies a site resplendent in indigenous plants and trees. Its main areas and six cottages are linked by well-kept paved paths through the grounds. A beautiful sculpture of a rhino welcomes guests to the communal building, an open-fronted and open-plan structure with a stretched-canvas roof. There are amazing views through the forest and down to the swimming pool. The lounge has two sets of furniture – one wooden framed, one more cushiony in design – each surrounding a coffee table. The bar is situated at the back of the building and is very interesting aesthetically, being constructed of distressed steel! The bar stools are African drum in style and made of cow skin. There is also a small library adjacent to the lounge. The dining room is accessed via a couple of steps onto a slightly higher level. This boasts great views too – and it has the feel of a restaurant, with its separate tables for guests and elegant vibe. The indoor areas are completed by a curio shop. Just outside, a deck provides room for outdoor dining, while the swimming pool is surrounded by sun loungers and is the perfect place for cooling off in between activities. The Kindani River is separated only by a small fence and it is very relaxing to listen to the river while having a dip in the pool!

Guest accommodation at Rhino River Camp comprises six charming cottages, built in the same style as the camp’s main building. Each stands on a wooden deck, at a level blending seamlessly into the tree canopy. From the small veranda, the view is of tamarinds, raffia palms and yellow fever trees, while below each cottage a stream flows by. Inside, there is a wooden-framed double bed or twin beds, in addition to bedside tables, end-of-bed bench, and writing table and chair. The en-suite facilities consist of flush toilet, bidet, single or double steel washbasin/s, and unscreened shower. As an added bonus, there is also a small tented sala, a zen area, where guests can relax and enjoy the forest! This has two director’s chairs on its deck and a pair of armchairs plus a small table under cover. It is an unusual feature for a safari camp – and we like it! All cottages are standard size bar one larger unit, which is ideal for families – this has extra sleeping space and its own plunge pool.

ACTIVITIES AT RHINO RIVER CAMP:

As far as activities are concerned, there is a lot on offer here!

  • Game drives take place during early morning and late afternoon, in Meru National Park.
  • With its 870 sq. km of bush, grasslands, woodlands and water sources, the park is home to a wealth of wildlife – all Big Five animals, in addition to cheetah, giraffe, zebra, oryx, kudu, gazelle, crocodile and hippo!
  • If you like birds, you are in for a real treat as Meru is rightly described as a birder’s paradise.
  • Guided walks are possible in Rhino River Camp’s private concession – this is a wonderful way to see all the small things on safari!
  • Guests wishing to stretch their legs a little are welcome to take an escorted hike, either to Kilimanjaro, an extinct volcano only 2km from camp, or to Kiolu River Falls, just 5km away.
  • The camp provides mountain bikes for keen cyclists to explore the local landscape of maize and banana farms, while fishing is available in Meru.
  • Village visits are also on the activities menu – the camp is very supportive of the local community and staff are happy to arrange tours of the local school, for example.
  • And finally, we highly recommend an excursion to the rhino sanctuary!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
