"Alex Walker's Ngare Serian is one of the Mara's top properties. With only four high-quality authentic tented suites, this is a top-end small camp offering very high levels of guiding and a flexible approach to safaris. A YZ favorite across the country. "

OVERVIEW:

One of eight camps in the Serian series, Ngare brings all the characteristics of the collection to the riverside. Nestling between the Mara River and the escarpment, the camp’s defining feature is its air of seclusion. If you are after peace and quiet, you will find it here! Ngare Serian has loads to recommend it as a haven for travelers to this part of Kenya. Full of character and featuring those supersize marquee tents, it is hard to beat!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via a swing bridge over the river. This is some 50m long, narrow enough to require crossing in single file, and prone to a bit of a wobble! It is completely safe, but it does not suit everyone. However, if you can bear to look, the views of the rushing river below are pretty spectacular!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT NGARE SERIAN:

The mess tent is a delight, mounted on gorgeous dark wood floors and reclining upon the west bank. It contains a lounge and a dining area. The lounge is full of sumptuous sofas and armchairs. It incorporates a deck, which extends towards the river and provides further seating and a brazier for those evenings of sitting around the fire and swapping safari stories! The mess tent’s dining area boasts a sizeable table and upright chairs to accommodate at least ten guests. And there are other areas outdoors for communal meals.

Ngare Serian’s guest accommodation consists of just four tents. These are referred to as the marquees, providing a clue concerning their size! All are situated north of the mess tent, occupying fairly high hardwood platforms and stretching along the riverbank. There is enough space between the tents to afford plenty of privacy. The first three tents enjoy lovely views of the river rapids, while the fourth looks out over a pool that is home to a pod of hippo! At night there is quite a symphony of whirling water and wallowing hippos. Inside the tents, the beds are very large and four-poster for a touch of luxury. There are mosquito nets and ample room for such furnishings as armchairs, luggage stands, and characterful carved tables for vases of various plants and flowers. Oriental rugs adorn the polished floors. From morning until late afternoon, three sides of the tents may be opened to allow cool breezes to waft through. The accommodation also benefits from 24-hour electricity and the en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, twin washbasin, shower, and bathtub. Everything is very well appointed and beautifully detailed. The bathtubs even have a view of the river!

ACTIVITIES AT NGARE SERIAN:

The camp owns an exclusive conservation area covering over 600 hectares, so there is a lot of ground to explore!

  • Every group of guests receives a private vehicle and driver/guide for game drives. This means that you decide what you want to do! Most of the drives are enjoyed in the Mara North Conservancy, but it is also possible to venture into the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Both destinations have a wealth of wildlife to view – all Big Five animals, plus an abundance of other predators and herbivores. And the reserve is host to the wildebeest Great Migration from July to October!
  • The birdlife is brilliant too. Guests can get to know the camp’s private concession through guided walks – the trek up the Oloololo escarpment is well worth the views.
  • There is also bush running, fishing, or fly camping at The Nest Treehouse, a perfect spot for a picnic followed by sleeping under the stars.

We love the flexibility provided by the private vehicle and driver/guide arrangement – and the standards of guiding at Ngare Serian are excellent! All the guides are knowledgeable and friendly, happy to answer any questions. Back at camp, there is superb service and a real family feel. Kenyan hosts Adrian and Rosin are charming – their enthusiasm for the bush is infectious and they have a delightful dog called Wifi!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
