“Located within the Mugie Conservancy, Mugie House is best suited to couples or small groups looking for a flexible yet intimate safari experience. With incredible views across the conservancy, this is an affordable option in the Laikipia area!”

OVERVIEW:

Formerly known as Mutamaiyu House, Mugie House is now managed by the team at Governors’, guaranteeing first-class safari experiences! The Governors’ Camp Collection includes Governors’ Camp and Little Governors’ Camp in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Mugie is made up of one large communal house and nine guest cottages, all redesigned by Chris Payne, who also styled Sabyinyo, Loldia, and Il Moran. Mugie can be booked on an individual or exclusive basis. The price of your stay will include the accommodation, all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and a laundry service. The house is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Mugie House is situated in the Mugie Wildlife Conservancy, in North Laikipia, on top of a hill! The conservancy is located almost 300 kilometers from Nairobi, and it’s accessible via flight from the city’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MUGIE HOUSE:

Guest accommodation consists of beautiful cottages, all constructed using timber, stone, and makuti thatch. The cottages have been individually furnished and very well appointed overall. Each has a bedroom containing a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, some art and artifacts, and a warming fireplace for chilly nights! The en-suite facilities comprise a flush toilet, washbasin, shower, and bath. One cottage is offered as a suite and boasts its own plunge pool, perfect for honeymooners, and there is also a family cottage with an ensuite double and twin room that are interconnected by a spacious lounge area with a wide veranda and private plunge pool. Many of the cottages have Wi-Fi access, and all have spectacular views! The cottages face south-east and look out over olive forests and sprawling grasslands as far as majestic Mount Kenya beyond.

The communal facilities at Mugie House can be found in the main house. Surrounded by olive trees, this is a charming timber-and-stone structure with a thatch roof. Inside, the communal lounge offers super-comfy sofas and armchairs around a central coffee table, occasional tables set with elegant lighting, bookshelves full of interesting reading material, a few intriguing artifacts, and a lovely cozy fireplace. The dining room has a fireplace too, in addition to a large table flanked by smart upright chairs, an impressive chandelier, and wide windows with views over the wildlife conservancy. Mugie also has numerous verandas, perfect for relaxing and marveling at the scenery! The house’s grounds are beautifully kept, and they include a sparkling cliff-top swimming pool and shaded alfresco lounging and dining space, with similar views to the rooms.

ACTIVITIES AT MUGIE HOUSE:

Mugie House offers an exciting variety of activities, as follows:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - Drives will be available by day and by night, with loads of wildlife to see in the Mugie conservancy! All Big Five are in residence – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Other predators include cheetah, hyena, civet, genet, aardvark, aardwolf, jackal, and wild dog. The herbivore count features Grevy’s and Burchell’s zebras, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, eland, impala, dik-dik, and gerenuk.
  • Guided walks

Also accompanied by knowledgeable and experienced guides, walks will offer opportunities to get to know the smaller lives of the conservancy, not least the birdlife. Keen birders will enjoy looking out for over 250 species of feathery friend, among them Mugie specials such as martial eagle, Denham’s bustard, and four-banded sandgrouse.
  • Camel rides

    - For an alternative way of wildlife watching, why not head out on a camel? You’ll be able to get thrillingly close to an assortment of wildlife.
  • Big cat monitoring

    - Fans of felines will love getting involved in tracking the likes of lion, leopard, and more.
  • Pursuit tracking with security bloodhounds

    - Here’s another treat for trackers! We’ll provide all the details as soon as we can.
  • Community ‘market day’ visits

    - If you like to combine time on safari with a little culture, you’ll appreciate trips into the local community to experience a busy market day.
  • Kayaking

    - This activity will be fantastic for watersports fans, as well as anyone interested in viewing Mugie Conservancy’s aquatic species.
  • Fishing

    - August 2009 saw the completion of a project to construct a dam in Mugie. Today this is a lake, and it’ll provide bass and other fishing for guests of the house. It’s popular with elephant too.
  • Camping

    - Up for an adventure? Camping trips will also be available – brilliant for guests staying at least three nights here.
  • Golf

    - There’s even a golf course! This has six holes, three sets of tees, and a replica each of mountains Kenya and Kilimanjaro. It’ll be a lot of fun in between activities such as vehicle and walking safaris.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
