With beautiful views of the surrounding bush, this owner-run accommodation is great if you want to experience authentic Africa, whilst also enjoying a bit of luxury! The house, run by a Kenyan–Scottish couple, has a very friendly feel to it, and places a high emphasis on sustainability – you can actually see the banks of solar panels as you drive towards the farm!
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Lewa House is a luxury farmhouse property, located in central Kenya in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
The main building, complete with a thatched roof, includes a living room and terrace that acts as a reception area. The dining room forms the heart of the house. With a cosy log fire and a very relaxed atmosphere, it is an ideal location for sitting and chilling out after a long day of activities! Lewa House boasts its own garden (fully fenced to keep the elephants from stealing the food!) filled with fresh, nutritious ingredients that are used in the meals. Guests may also enjoy the free-form swimming pool, said to be the warmest in Lewa due to its insulation.
Accommodation at Lewa House consists of two very distinct categories. There are three family cottages that sleep four in total – with the option of twin or double beds. These homely cottages also include two en-suites, showers, and a veranda. If you are travelling in a large group, the cottages are available to book with the whole property on an exclusive basis. Lewa House’s other form of accommodation is the ‘earth pods’. Designed by the owner’s dad, they have everything you need – but in one room! The pods sleep two or three people each. They also come with a small living area and a beautiful, large veranda! All pods have luxurious bathrooms including walk-in showers, but three have outdoor bath tubs too – where guests can enjoy a bath whilst watching wildlife!
Due to the family feel of Lewa House, service is very good. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere means that guests feel at home instantly. Cooking staff are very happy to cater for specific dietary requirements, as long as they are told in advance. The food here is incredible – some say the best in Kenya!
The main activities at Lewa House are game drives and walking safaris. Game viewing here is very good, with guests being very likely to see elephant and rhino on numerous occasions. Guests can also go on a game walk with Calum, one of the owners. He is a fully qualified trails guide, and a game walk is a great alternative way to view wildlife. Other activities at Lewa include camel- and horse riding, tours of the back of house and farm areas, and a flight on a bi-plane, flown by the owner’s uncle. This is an amazing way to view Africa from the air, providing a truly memorable experience!
