"This is a very good value safari camp. It is simpler than some, hence its excellent pricetag. But it is still comfortable, and has the same fantastic Asilia quality of food, service, and guiding that you find at all of their camps."

OVERVIEW:

This is a very chic little camp in a conservancy that is chock-full of wildlife! It is also a brilliant base for travelers who would like to experience all the magic of the MMNR without feeling too crowded.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

It has a fabulous location amid evergreen Euclea trees and splendid orange-leaf croton within the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, close to a salt lick that attracts big cats and game alike!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT ENCOUNTER MARA:

The communal facilities of Encounter Mara are housed in two tents, one for lounging and the other for dining. Both are very comfortable. The lounge tent contains sofas and armchairs positioned around coffee tables that are strewn with a few books and displays of fresh flowers – the furnishings are simple, yet the clean lines lend a cool contemporary feel that defines chic! The tent is open-fronted, presenting superb views of the nearby salt lick and through the forest to the savanna beyond. The dining tent is also open-fronted and just as stylish, with its smart tables, upright chairs, and vibrant wall-hangings for a splash of color on an otherwise neutral palette. Guests are invited to dine outside too, on the camp’s well-kept lawns or in the cool shade of trees.

Encounter Mara’s guest accommodation comprises 10 permanents tents, linked to the main areas via paths laid with elephant dung! If you haven’t walked on dung before, prepare yourself for a treat – it is delightfully springy! The forest location provides plenty of privacy. Each tent has a veranda with a day bed in addition to a hammock, a couple of director’s chairs and a small table – and, of course, wonderful woodland/savanna views! Inside, there is either a king-size bed or twin beds – and there is even enough room for a double and twins, which is great for groups and families. There are also bedside tables with lamps, a sturdy storage chest, shelving for clothes and other belongings, and an easy chair or two. The en-suite facilities are situated to the side of the bedroom and consist of chemical toilet, twin washbasins and classic safari shower! The style throughout the tents mirrors that of the main areas – simple yet very chic and comfortable. We like it a lot!

ACTIVITIES AT ENCOUNTER MARA:

Activities from Encounter Mara include game drives, bush walks, community visits and hot air balloon safari.

  • The Mara Naboisho Conservancy is seriously good for game drives, which are available during the day and the night! It is possible to drive off-road in the conservancy, which is fantastic for experiencing particularly close encounters with wildlife. All Big Five animals roam the rippling plains and wooded valleys – and it is also common to spot cheetah, wild dog, hyena, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, antelope species, and many more! The bird count is high too, featuring highlights such as ostrich, vultures, and the spectacular secretary bird.
  • Guests are also invited to visit the Maasai Mara National Reserve, an offer many take up especially during Great Migration season! Within the conservancy, bush walks can also be arranged – this is the ideal activity if you want to get to know the area really well.
  • Excursions to local communities yield insights into the Maasai culture and way of life – highly recommended by YZ! And hot air balloon safaris enable guests to see it all from the sky, beginning at first light and ending in a delicious champagne breakfast!
