When To Visit Malindi and Watamu Beach:

Delta Dunes is located on the stunning Tana Delta on the Kenyan Coast. This is an area teeming with interesting ecosystems!

At YZ, we love the authentic feel of Delta Dunes and the big mix of activities on offer! With over two decades’ experience of accommodating travellers to this adventurous and unique part of the world, Delta Dunes provides first-rate service and some truly authentic marine safari activities!

The lodge, built on the Kenya Coast, is tucked high up in sand dunes, palm forests and mangrove swamps, with spectacular views of the river.

The communal areas of Delta Dunes go a long way to making guests feel part of the scenery. The central pool, flanked by sunloungers, offers a peaceful place to relax and unwind! The lounge area sits high up within the complex, with amazing views of the river beyond. Tea and fresh pastries are served here every single afternoon! The comfortable bar also offers spectacular views. The food provided in the dining area features local river ingredients, such as seafood freshly caught every morning by local fisherman, capturing the true taste of Kenya. Dining at night is a very special experience, as lanterns light your way along a trail to pretty tables laid out along the Tana River, where you can dine under the stars – magic!

Seven unique cottages make up the guest accommodation at Delta Dunes, each in its own secluded space for ultimate privacy. Each cottage is open at the front and built from driftwood, adding to the outback feel. The cooling breeze of the Indian Ocean wafts across all private verandas with their incredible panoramic views! Inside, the décor is clearly inspired by the surrounding marine life, with shells used as adornments, old dhows as furnishings, and a gigantic Swahili bed for a luxurious night’s sleep. All bathrooms include a shower area, which is airy and filled with sunlight. There is also a family cottage with two bathrooms instead of one, offering a little bit more space.

Delta Dunes provides an exciting mix of activities! The diverse wildlife and landscape surrounding the lodge guarantees that you will not get bored here. In the immediate area alone, guests can spot over 400 species of birdlife, in addition to crocodile, hippo, rock cod, catfish, snapper and barracuda! And once you have finished snoozing in the hammock next to the pool, you can get out into the wild and discover more magnificent species.

Activities to get the blood pumping include kayaking in the shaded creeks, boat trips along the river and ocean, and racing sand yachts on the dunes! In the evening, guests can enjoy a riverboat cruise while the sun descends. This is a wonderful way to end a day – and it gets even better, with freshly caught seafood cooked for you to eat by candlelight. Guests who have followed the lantern trail to the dining area on the beach can relax on the comfy cushions on the sand and sit around the campfire to swap stories from their day on the river!
