"If you are a kitesurfer, look no further! This simple but really charming beach getaway calls to the 'adventurous traveler' in all of us – but offers a lot of comfort and excellent food."

*Unfortunately, Che Shale is within an area of Kenya that the FCO is advising against travel to and therefore we are not selling this property at the moment. If you would like to speak to one of our consultants for more up-to-date information, please don't hesitate to contact us.*

OVERVIEW:

For a mid-budget, rustic vacation, where you can do as much or as little as you fancy, Che Shale gives you everything you need – comfortable living spaces, friendly staff, and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Che Shale is located just north of Malindi on the northern Kenyan coast.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT CHE SHALE:

The large communal area, which houses a lounge, restaurant and bar, is set on the beach, where there is also a beach shop selling clothes and jewelry. The flooring is made from palm-leaf matting and the generous roof is made from palm-leaf tiles (makuti), providing some welcome cool shade. As other building materials include Casaruina trees, palm trees, doum palms, coconut fiber, mango wood and other renewable local woods, there are no plastic signs of modern life, which means you can truly escape it all! The furniture is wooden too, carefully designed to give the natural materials a slightly contemporary feel. The barstools, seating and loft lounge area are softened by large comfortable cushions, so there are plenty of places where you can relax as you enjoy Che Shale’s friendly atmosphere. In the evenings, if you fancy a boogie, they can turn up the music as you dance the night away, in this little piece of paradise!

The property’s seven main bandas are all en suite, constructed from the same natural materials as the communal area. The furniture is all handmade, using local materials and not a single power tool, and again there is soft, palm-leaf matting as flooring. A further banda, also made from those materials, comes without electricity – it also has no en suite and it is considered the ‘budget’ option for guests. With no windows, locks, carpets or air conditioning, all the bandas have a very open and natural feel to them. As the interiors were designed by Marzia Chicherretti, they strike the perfect balance between simplicity and comfort. They even have names! Suli Suli and Tewa accommodate two guests, Fulusi three, Songoro four, and Kole Kole six. Finally, Shakwe and Kiboma offer more space and therefore come with a higher price tag! Whichever you chose, you will be very well taken care of in this beautiful part of the world.

ACTIVITIES AT CHE SHALE:

While Che Shale is the center of Kenya’s first kite surfing school, kite surfing is not the only reason to stay. There is the ocean on your doorstep and all the activities that brings – surfing, body-boarding, wake-boarding, deep-sea game fishing, and dhow trips. Alternatively, you can always simply lie in a hammock and enjoy the scenery! If kite surfing is for you, there is professional, safe instruction and some of the best conditions on the coast, with a steady onshore breeze most of the year. If you take a dhow, then do not forget to give snorkeling a go. Guided bushwalks are also available! Although there is plenty for you to do, as you are in one of the most serene places in the world, make sure you leave time to enjoy the peace and relaxation of the spots along the beach, designed especially for you to do absolutely nothing.
