The Perfect Camp for Adventure Seekers in Kenya

When YZ expert Wies ventured to Kenya recently, as well as experiencing fly camping, an incredible sleep-out, and flying in a biplane, he stayed at Laikipia Wilderness Camp, which very quickly became one of his favorite properties.

"In October 2018 I was lucky enough to travel to Kenya and spend a few nights here, and I came away feeling that I had never had so much fun on safari. My days were action packed with a brilliant variety of activities and nights were spent around the fire, sometimes just for drinks but at others for dinner too. There really is nothing like a succulent steak right off the hot coals!!"

Located on the high plains of Laikipia in Central Kenya, Laikipia Wilderness Camp is the perfect camp for anyone with a sense of adventure! From walking safaris to night game drives followed by sleep-outs under the stars, there is plenty on offer to keep guests active whilst on safari.

Owned and run by Steve Carey, Laikipia Wilderness epitomizes the style of safari camp I love the most – intimate and with a strong focus on delivering as authentic an experience as possible.

What sets Laikipia Wilderness apart?

1. Flexibility

Laikipia Wilderness Camp also really comes into its own when taking into consideration the flexibility of what you can do and when. Most safari camps will work on the basis of a morning activity and an afternoon activity, with lunch in camp. Laikipia Wilderness, however, offers a lot more flexibility in this regard, and a morning drive can quickly turn into an extensive walk with lunch in the bush. And as it’s located in a private conservancy, the camp is not restricted by national park rules and regulations, making for a considerably more diverse experience!

2. Knowledgeable guides

All this is very much made possible by Steve and the team at the camp. Steve himself is backed up by over 20 years of experience as a pro-guide. Having started in Zimbabwe before moving up to Zambia and finally Kenya, he is literally a walking treasure trove of knowledge and this truly shines through when tracking game on foot. For me, this was best illustrated when we were tracking elephants before being distracted by a honeyguide trying to lead us to a hive and ultimately honey. We didn’t follow the honeyguide in this instance (lunch was waiting!!), but it is this sort of attention to detail that makes a good safari experience just that little bit better.

3. Endless list of activities

All in all, my few days around Laikipia were filled to the brim with walks, game drives, a sleep-out under the stars, and adrenaline-inducing jumps off rocks into water pools below. The camp offers a genuinely fun and exhilarating safari experience that should be at (or very near) the top of the bucket list for anyone with a keen sense of adventure and love of safari.
