Specific highlights of this Kenya safari:

  • Views, views, and more wonderful views!
  • Great value-for-money safari
  • Explores two iconic reserves: Amboseli and the Maasai Mara
  • A very traditional Kenya safari
  • Expertly guided game drives, birding, and cultural visits

Overview of the suggested Kenya safari lodges and activities:

Although this itinerary is what we typically call a ‘value’ safari, that doesn’t mean that luxuries have been waylaid. You’ll start by flying into Nairobi, Kenya’s exciting capital, for a restful stopover, before spending three days and nights exploring Amboseli and soaking up the incredible views of the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. Spend time with some ‘big tusker’ elephants too – nothing is more iconic. Elerai Camp is eco-friendly with a strong community focus, making this a real feel-good safari.

From Amboseli, you’ll finish the adventure in the Maasai Mara for a front-row seat to the Great Migration. The dry season (between July and October) is a great time to see wildlife and sees the Great Migration flooding through the Maasai Mara – however, with an abundance of wildlife and a temperate climate, this trip works year-round, especially with shoulder and green season rates!

Days 1– NAIROBI

Crown Plaza Nairobi, Kenya

On arrival into Nairobi, it is a very short shared transfer to Crowne Plaza Nairobi, where you’ll spend just one night. The hotel is perfect for stopovers, with its plush lounges, rooftop pool and bar, gym, and even spa. There are several places to eat here. At Kitchen 9 Restaurant, you can have a buffet-style meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), while Aroma coffee shop is great for a late-night snack as it is open 24 hours per day. To sample a local beer or to wind down at the end of the day with a cocktail, you can head to Velocity Bar. The Crown Plaza is modern and comfortable, and very conveniently located as it is just a few minutes from the airport, the perfect spot to stay in on arrival into Kenya’s capital city.

Days 2–5 AMBOSELI

Game drive in Amboseli at Elerai Camp, Kenya

On the second day, you’ll transfer privately from Crowne Plaza to then fly out to Amboseli. Here, you’ll stay at Elerai Camp, which is located on a private conservancy just outside the national park. It offers incredible views out over Mount Kilimanjaro from the guest bedrooms. As the views really are spectacular, the rooms all have private balconies and loungeable daybeds where you can soak up the vistas throughout the day. The area’s wildlife highlights include four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – and elephant populations are particularly impressive. Amboseli is also home to numerous smaller mammals and lots of birdlife. Elerai Camp is a comfortable and eco-friendly property with a lot of authenticity. Guests will especially love the close links to the local Maasai community, where you can meet the local tribes and learn how to light a fire, how to use plants for a range of medical conditions, and even how to survive in the middle of the bush.

Days 5-8 MAASAI MARA

Lion, Governors Camp, Maasai Mara, Kenya

From Amboseli, you’ll head to the Maasai Mara, Kenya’s most famous reserve. You’ll stay at the very traditional, and considered one of the Maasai Mara’s original safari camps, Governors’. This camp has undoubtedly one of the best wildlife-viewing locations in the reserve. It is hidden in a riverine forest that hugs the banks of the Mara river, which is teeming with birdlife, hippos, and crocodiles. With elephants regularly walking by the camp and being so close to the famous river-crossing locations of the Great Migration, this camp certainly delivers on game viewing. Activities are mostly focused on game drives, which take place each day during early morning and late afternoon.
