The Serengeti is awesome at this time of year, as the herds spread across the southern plains getting ready for the calving season. This safari offers great value as well as the guarantee of epic big game and some fabulous R&R on Zanzibar at the end.

Not many safaris offer this much of an adventure! We use a number of small, intimate tented camps, guaranteeing that wow factor of an experience that very few properties are able to provide. Starting with the Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater region and a very adventurous camp, this trips kicks off with plenty of thrills from the outset. Next, a stay at a mobile camp in the Serengeti only adds to the explorer flavour, and finally the relaxed vibe at a hotel on Zanzibar supplies the perfect place to ‘chill’!

This trip uses three of our favourite adventurous small properties – Isoitok Camp, Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp, and Pongwe Beach Hotel. One of the reasons we love all these camps is that they are all privately owned – there are no big companies involved here! If you want a great-value experience and a guarantee of amazing game and authenticity then look no further… this trip offers exactly that.

On the first day of your trip, you will fly out to Tanzania and transfer by road to Isoitok Camp. This property is situated close to no fewer than three excellent wildlife areas – Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park! The name of the camp means ‘many stones’. There certainly are a lot of stones here, together with a lot of wood – these materials give Isoitok a great authentic feel. The mess tent is open sided, with amazing views towards the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara beyond, while all guest tents are spacious and comfortable. Unsurprisingly, activities focus on getting out and seeing all those superb safari areas! Throughout your stay, you will have your own safari vehicle. You can enjoy game drives and walking safaris within the Camp’s own concession too. And travellers who like a little culture on holiday will appreciate opportunities to take part in a Maasai medicine walk, a Maasai boma visit, and much more besides. A stay at Isoitok is a thrilling start to your safari!

Board basis and activities:
Full-board accommodation including all meals, soft drinks, a collection of house alcoholic drinks, all safari activities, and a laundry service.

Days 3–6 Serengeti National Park

On Day 3, you will fly to the Serengeti for three nights at Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp. This is an adventurous and very exciting camp that follows the Great Migration! Its communal tents and 8–12 guest tents move throughout the year, to keep up with the huge herds. Both the lounge tent and the dining tent are always well situated for relaxing and enjoying meals. Imagine a day full of game viewing followed by chats around the campfires every evening. Think open skies and stars… cold beers and G&T’s… canvas tents that epitomise the very essence of safari! We cannot recommend this camp highly enough and all our clients who have experienced it for themselves agree that it’s something special. If value but a guarantee of a great experience are your driving factors towards a decent trip then this property will deliver.

This time of year sees the Great Migration herds mass in the Southern Serengeti from 15th December onwards. Calving month is February, when approximately half a million animals are born in a week. The result is one of Africa’s most amazing sites, backed up by the sheer concentration of predators.

Board basis and activities:
Fully inclusive of meals, selected house alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, a laundry service, and standard game drives from a shared open-sided 4×4 game drive vehicle.

Days 7–10 Zanzibar

For the last part of your trip, you will fly to Zanzibar. Here you will spend four nights at Pongwe Beach Hotel – a property we have used for over ten years! Pongwe is owned by Val, with whom we have a great relationship. The hotel is located on one of Zanzibar’s best beaches, with the added bonus of only a few properties nearby – this is a very clever choice for a super-value break featuring a seriously good beach and a tangible character.

Zanzibar is a very hard place to find real value, but Pongwe has it just right in all the right places, while openly admitting to not being over the top! Think relaxed beach cottages, where you step off your patio and your feet hit the sand. The rooms are simple but more than comfortable, and come with en-suites. You can choose from some of the glamorous suites to some of the simpler garden cottages.

As far as activities are concerned, you can enjoy a range of sports, such as snorkelling and cycling, as well as an assortment of excursions – trips to Stone Town, the village of Ras Nungwi, and the beautiful Jozani Forest are all available. And of course you can spend time relaxing on the beach! Pongwe has long been a YZ favourite – we love the Hotel’s laidback beach style.

Board basis and activities:
Bed-and-breakfast accommodation (half board available for extra $35), tea/coffee room service, complimentary beach towels and bath towels, free bottle of mineral water daily, free Wi-Fi, mountain bike hire, kayaks hire, various games equipment hire.

On Day 11, you will transfer by road back to Zanzibar’s airport for your international flight home.
