"Little Sable is on the north-eastern fringe of the Delta, situated away from the main water channels in a woodland area. For game viewing, this area is best visited from July to early November, when the mopane trees are less thick."

OVERVIEW:

Formerly called the Jackal & Hide, Little sister camp to Sable Alley, Little Sable is another superb property brought to you by Natural Selection. This company was founded by four friends, who between them have over a hundred years’ guiding experience! Natural Selection’s main aim is to thrill, and we recommend their camps and lodges to travelers with a taste for adventure. The accommodation at Little Sable is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, all local drinks, daily activities, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via game drive transfer from the local airstrip, approached from Maun. It’s situated in the central region of the Khwai Private Reserve, amidst grasslands, floodplains, and forests.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT LITTLE SABLE:

There are eight guest tents, all spaced out over the grasslands. Each is raised above ground level on wooden decking, with a few steps up to the deck. The tents are Meru in style – an exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner layer to create a private veranda. The veranda offers a couple of safari chairs, a small table, and amazing views over Khwai! Entering the tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables, a writing desk and chair, and wildlife artwork. The en-suite washroom is positioned behind the headboard of the bed/s, and it contains a flush toilet, twin washbasins in a spacious vanity unit, and shower.

Most of the communal areas at Little Sable are found in the camp’s very attractive timber-and-thatch lodge building, also elevated above the ground. As you approach, you’ll see a sunken lounge, essentially a corner unit of seating either side of the entrance. As with the guest tents, a few steps lead up into the structure. Immediately in front of you is the camp’s well-stocked bar. To the left is the pleasant lounge, with its colorfully cushioned chairs and sofas. There’s a dining space here too. On the other side of the lodge is the main dining area, where leaf-patterned upright chairs are set up around a long table. Wildlife artwork is displayed throughout the building, and elegant lighting hangs overhead. Strolling back down the steps, you’ll note the camp’s large fire-pit a short distance ahead. Here, a ring of safari chairs surrounds the central burner, providing the perfect place to get together with fellow safarists and talk about all your adventures!

ACTIVITIES AT LITTLE SABLE:

Little Sable offers an exhilarating variety of activities. Please note, a couple of these are dependent on water levels, indicated with an asterisk below:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The Khwai Private Reserve covers 2,000 square kilometers and it’s home to an impressive amount of wildlife. Vehicle safaris take place during morning, afternoon, and evening too. Among the species you can look out for are four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Smaller predators and herbivores in residence include cheetah, wild dog, baboon, impala, roan, and sable. And there are hundreds of birds!
  • Walking safaris

    - Also accompanied by a knowledgeable and experienced guide, walks from Little Sable are fantastic for anyone interested in becoming acquainted with the plants and insects of Khwai. You can enjoy birding too – the area’s specials include bat-hawk, long-crested eagle, and rosy-throated longclaw.
  • Boat trips*

    - Exploring the waterways around camp makes for a wonderful experience, featuring sights such as huge hippos and a wealth of waterbirds.
  • Mokoro excursions*

    - This activity is particularly thrilling – the mokoro, a dug-out canoe, doesn’t have a motor, so you can focus all your attention on the sights and sounds of the waterways’ wildlife!
  • Viewing from hides

    - Don’t forget your camera and binocs, as the camp has several ground-level hides, making for super-close encounters with lots of different species.
  • Photographic safaris

    - The camp has specially adapted vehicles for keen photographers, as well as a photo guide.
  • Sky-bed sleep-outs

    - Available from 1st April to 31st October, this activity involves drifting off to sleep on a platform in the bush. Please note, the sky-bed must be booked in advance.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
