“Tawana is set in one of the most pristine landscapes, the Moremi Game Reserve. This camp operates in partnership with Chief Tawana Moremi, whose family has called this land home for centuries.”

OVERVIEW:

In the south-east part of the Okavango Delta’s iconic Moremi Game Reserve, Natural Selection’s unfenced wilderness camp, Tawana, offers some of Botswana’s best land-based game viewing. Located on the permanent Gomoti river, the camp is a partnership with Chief Tawana Moremi and the Batawana tribe, aiming to safeguard the ecosystem and provide opportunities for the local community. Tawana combines well with other Okavango Delta and Linyanti camps that offer water-based activities and night game drives. Rates are full board and include accommodation, all meals and drinks, laundry, daily game drive activities, airstrip transfers, expert guiding, and park entry fees. The camp is open year round, though game viewing is best from July through September.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Tawana is located within the wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve on the eastern side of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, east of the Qorokwe and Chitabe concessions. By light aircraft, it’s a 20-minute flight from Maun to Santawani Airstrip, followed by a 45-minute drive to the camp.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT TAWANA:

Tawana has eight spacious, well-spaced suites, including five standard and three family units (able to accommodate a maximum of five guests each), with private plunge pools and outdoor salas overlooking the Gomoti river. Connected by a raised wooden walkway, accommodations feature ceiling fans and eco-efficient over-bed air-conditioning systems, and since the camp is 100 per cent solar powered, guests benefit from 24-hour electricity. The en-suite bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers as well as a separate bath. Separate lounges offer comfortable seating arrangements, and each unit has a daybed and writing desk. Additional amenities include a Nespresso coffee machine and tea-making facilities, an inclusive mini-bar, and in-room weights and yoga mats for fitness enthusiasts. Wi-Fi is available in all suites.

The camp’s extensive open-sided communal areas give the feeling of space and privacy, with plenty of different seating options and a library in one of the lounges. The vast deck allows for outside dining and features a fire-pit for guests to congregate around. There’s also a wood-fired pizza oven and a walk-in wine cellar, which enhance its culinary offerings. The 16-metre lap pool offers a welcome respite between game-viewing activities, and those wishing to exercise will enjoy the well-equipped gym. Tawana’s on-site spa offers a menu of facial and body treatments.

ACTIVITIES AT TAWANA:

As the camp is positioned within a national reserve, activities are limited to daylight hours and mainly focus on 4WD game drives.

  • Game drives

    – Twice-daily 4WD game drives provide opportunities for guests to explore Moremi Game Reserve’s spectacular landscape and to enjoy unparalleled game viewing. Wildlife concentrations include lion, leopard, and African wild dog, and the waters of the Gomoti river attract plenty of antelope, including the semi-aquatic red lechwe and sitatunga, as well as hippo, elephant, and Nile crocodile. As this is a national game reserve, guests must return to camp by 6:30 each evening.
  • Helicopter safaris

    – An aerial safari offers a completely different perspective as you soar above the Okavango Delta’s maze of water channels, observing the extraordinary landscape with its floodplains, spillways, and lagoons. Please note that this activity incurs an extra cost.
  •  Birding

    – More than four hundred bird species have been recorded in Moremi Game Reserve. Particularly during the summer months, birding safaris introduce guests to some of the most noteworthy variants.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
