"Small, exclusive, and very high quality, Wilderness Little Tubu offers great wet and dry safaris for much of the year. Easy access onto Hundu Island gets the game, with Jao’s waterways and deeper channels also close by. Yet another superb Wilderness property."

OVERVIEW:

Wilderness Little Tubu is owned and run by Wilderness. This company’s impressive portfolio lists 16 properties within the Okavango Delta! We recommend Wilderness Little Tubu to travelers planning to visit just one part of the Delta, and it combines well with a Linyanti camp such as Wilderness DumaTau. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, all local drinks, twice-daily scheduled camp activities, park fees, and a laundry service. The camp is open throughout the year. Usually, there’s a minimum age requirement of 12 years, but all ages are welcome when the camp is booked exclusively.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is usually accessed via 10 minutes’ road transfer from Hunda Island’s airstrip. It’s situated on this very scenic island, within the West Delta’s Jao Reserve.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WILDERNESS LITTLE TUBU:

Guest accommodation consists of just three tents. All are raised above ground level on wooden decking and surrounded by riverine forest, creating an adventurous treehouse feel! Each is approached from the communal structures along an elevated walkway. Entering the tent, you’ll find a king-size bed with mosquito netting, bedside lighting, a storage trunk, a writing desk and chair, and a pleasant seating area. The en-suite facilities are positioned behind the bed’s chunky headboard, which provides additional storage space. There’s a separate flush toilet and twin washbasins, as well as both indoor and outdoor showers. Finally, a sliding door leads from the bedroom onto the tent’s private veranda, which offers a couple of comfy chairs, a small table, and amazing views over the Jao Reserve!

The treehouse feel of Wilderness Little Tubu continues into the communal areas, as these too are raised well above the ground. Made out of canvas and timber, the buildings blend beautifully with the natural surroundings. In the lounge, well-cushioned seating surrounds a medley of occasional tables, all beneath elegant lighting. There’s a selection of reading material and a few board games too. The adjacent dining area contains a large table flanked by upright chairs. Everyone eats together here, relishing the camp’s delicious meals and range of beverages from the bar, which is built around a big waterberry tree! Al fresco dining is also available, on Wilderness Little Tubu’s viewing deck or around the fire-pit. The latter also serves as the go-to venue for pre-dinner drinks and sharing safari stories. And a short distance from the lounge and dining tent, there’s another deck, this time supporting the camp’s inviting plunge pool. The deck has sunloungers and parasols as well, making it the perfect place to relax between activities!

ACTIVITIES AT WILDERNESS LITTLE TUBU:

As water virtually surrounds the camp during peak flood season from May through to September, Wilderness Little Tubu is able to offer an outstanding variety of land- and water-based activities! Of course some of these are season dependent, indicated with an asterisk in the list below. And a couple of age restrictions apply too.

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - In full, the Jao Reserve covers 60 square kilometers of seasonal floodplains, permanent wetlands, and dry islands, such as the game-rich Hunda. Drives from camp take place during the morning and the afternoon, offering exciting opportunities for safarists to view a fine assortment of predators and herbivores! Among the highlights here are four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – and smaller species including cheetah, spotted hyena, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and all sorts of antelopes.
  •  Night drives

    - This activity showcases the nocturnal species of the reserve. Guests head out after sunset in the company of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, to search for the likes of aardvark, aardwolf, porcupine, and pangolin.
  •  Guided walks* (12+ years)

    - Walks are ideal for anyone interested in getting to know the smaller lives of Jao. These include plants, insects, and the reserve’s vibrant birdlife!
  •  Boat rides* (6+ years)

    - A classic wet-camp activity, boat rides are fantastic for observing the wildlife of the Delta’s waterways. You can look out for hippos, crocs, and a wealth of waterbirds!
  • Mokoro excursions* (12+ years)

    - A mokoro is a dug-out canoe. Aboard this quiet form of transport, you’ll be able to concentrate on the sounds as well as the sights of the wildlife.
  •  Catch-and-release fishing*

    - Wilderness Little Tubu provides some basic equipment. Fishing is usually possible from March to December every year.
  •  Star-bed sleep-outs

    - Not far from camp, there’s a raised platform. During the day, this is put to use as a hide, but at night it can function as a star-bed sleep-out venue, offering the experience of falling asleep under the stars!
  •  Helicopter flights

    - These flights incur an extra cost, but the sheer adrenalin rush you’ll get from soaring over the Okavango region is well worth it! From the air, you’ll enjoy views of parts of the Delta that are inaccessible via land or water vehicle.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
