"Hyena Pan is a relatively new and simple camp but a property that guarantees great game viewing in the exceptional (albeit rather busy) Khwai Reserve. Very good value for game viewing of this quality."

OVERVIEW:

Hyena Pan is owned and operated by Natural Selection. This company specializes in authentic safaris, and from its beginnings it has taken a keen interest in conservation. Among other camps it runs in Botswana are YZ favorites Jack’s Camp and San Camp, both on the Makgadikgadi Pans. Hyena Pan has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, safari activities, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp can be accessed via an hour’s road transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated amidst mopane trees on the banks of a lagoon, between the Khwai river, Moremi Game Reserve, and Chobe National Park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT HYENA PAN:

Guest accommodation consists of eight tents, each raised above ground level on decking. Every tent is Meru in style – an outer layer of canvas extends well over the inner layer to create a shady veranda. The veranda is approached up a ramp to one side, and it’s a great spot for relaxing and enjoying your views. Entering the tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, and seating at the foot of the bed. The décor is attractive, featuring plenty of colorful cushions! Additional amenities include mosquito nets, a standing fan, an electronic safe, and international power points (solar power). Each tent has mesh windows, covered by canvas when need be. And behind the bedroom space, you’ll find the en-suite washroom, with flush toilet, washbasin with mirror over, and walk-in shower. This area also has storage space, and it’s very well laid out, with stick walls providing a couple of nifty partitions!

The communal buildings at Hyena Pan are accessed from the guest tents via a sandy pathway through the mopanes. They too are elevated above the ground on decking, and they benefit from thatch roofs supported by timber beams. One structure houses the comfortable lounge, which features well-cushioned and vibrantly patterned sofas and armchairs, a Persian rug, and a selection of reading material. In the other, there’s a dining area with wooden tables-and-chairs, a bar that’s made out of an ancient log, and a second seating space. Guests can also relax and dine al fresco, on this building’s sundeck or within the camp’s boma. On ground level, there’s a classic fire-pit, where you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks and swap safari stories! Another deck adjoins the main lounge, offering an inviting splash pool. And from all decks guests enjoy views of Hyena Pan itself. This feature floods during the green season and is pumped full of water from a borehole when the weather is dry. Throughout the year, the pan entices a wealth of wildlife – hippo, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelopes, and a vast variety of water birds!

ACTIVITIES AT HYENA PAN:

Hyena Pan offers some classic safari activities, as follows:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - These take place during the morning and afternoon. The Khwai Private Reserve covers 200,000 hectares of savanna, woodland, and water sources, supporting an impressive range of wildlife. It also has the advantage of being close to Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park! You can look out for four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Smaller predators in residence include cheetah, hyena, jackals, and wild dog, while the count of less-hefty herbivores features hippo, giraffe, zebra, and all sorts of antelopes. And there’s ample birdlife!
  • Game walks

    - Also accompanied by a knowledgeable and experienced guide, walks in this wildlife-rich region offer opportunities to scrutinize the smaller aspects of Khwai – for example, the insects and plant life.
  • Wildlife viewing from platform

    - Not far from camp, there’s a platform raised about 5 meters above the ground. From here, you can enjoy amazing vistas over the pan and the woodlands!
  • Wildlife viewing from hide

    - This structure is positioned right next to the pan, so you can marvel at the local wildlife at very close quarters! Make sure you bring your camera and binoculars for this activity.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
