"I’ve always loved Xakanaxa’s location; it is my favorite of the northern Moremi lodges. Some people can pick holes in the lack of activities on offer, but game viewing is seriously good here and the camp has a tangible character. An excellent choice in my opinion."

OVERVIEW:

Camp Xakanaxa (pronounced ‘ka-ka-na-ka’) is owned and operated by Desert & Delta Safaris. This company’s portfolio features some impressive properties across Botswana, not least YZ favorites Camp Moremi and Camp Okavango. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, all local drinks, scheduled safari activities, park entrance fees, and a laundry service. There’s a minimum age requirement of 6 years.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp can be accessed via 25 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated on the beautiful banks of the Xakanaxa Lagoon, in the central region of the Moremi Game Reserve.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT CAMP XAKANAXA:

There are 12 guest tents, together accommodating a maximum of 24 travelers. These are raised on wooden decking and positioned along the edges of the lagoon. All are Meru in style, which means that an exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner structure to create a private viewing deck. On the deck, there’s some classic lounge and dining furniture, making it a great spot for relaxing, dining, and enjoying amazing vistas over Moremi! A small step leads down into the tent, in which you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, reading lights, a standing fan, a writing desk cum vanity table and chair, a luggage rack, and ample storage space. The en-suite facilities are accessed through a door towards the back of the tent, and they comprise a flush toilet, an attractive stone washbasin, and a shower. The camp supplies some toiletries, such as soap and shower gel. Additional in-room items include a tea-and-coffee station, a flashlight, an umbrella, an air horn for emergencies, a hairdryer, and 220V multi-adaptor plugs. Access for disabled travelers is available on request.

The lounge and dining areas at Camp Xakanaxa are housed in traditional timber-and-thatch structures. These are positioned over the water on sturdy stilts. Inside the lounge, plush leather sofas, armchairs, and poufs surround fairly ornate coffee and occasional tables. There are standing fans here too, as well as the camp’s library, with a laptop for a basic internet connection. The lounge also contains a well-stocked bar, where you can help yourself to an assortment of beverages. The dining area features two long tables flanked by upright chairs, and it’s the setting for tantalizing light breakfasts, brunches, afternoon teas, and dinners. Guests occasionally eat and drink al fresco, as the camp’s lounge and dining spaces flow out onto a spacious sundeck. From here, you can access the fire-pit, which benefits from the cool shade of an immense jackalberry tree! There’s also a plunge pool, with sunloungers set up within a sala. And another deck, on the other side of the site, boasts a larger pool. To get there, you pass by the reception area. This includes a curio shop, perfect for purchasing a few souvenirs!

ACTIVITIES AT CAMP XAKANAXA:

Camp Xakanaxa provides some exciting activities, as follows:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The area around camp features sprawling plains, seasonal floodplains, intriguing woodlands, and plentiful water sources. This diversity results in a wonderful wealth of wildlife! Drives are available during early morning and late afternoon, and the camp’s knowledgeable and experienced guides are able to cover a lot of ground in bringing you some memorable sightings. Some of the Big Five are in residence – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! You can also look out for smaller predators such as cheetah, spotted hyena, jackals, and wild dog, while other herbivores here include giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and a thrilling range of antelopes.
  • Motorized boat safaris

    - Hard-bottom aluminum boats are put into use for adventures involving the reserve’s waterways. Again in the company of expert guides, safarists can explore the Okavango Delta’s channels and lagoons, enjoying sights of elephant, hippo, and an exhilarating variety of waterbirds!
  • Birding

    - Moremi is a haven for birdlife. The reserve’s specials include martial eagle, pygmy goose, fulvous whistling duck, and the mysterious Pel’s fishing owl. Do remember to bring your camera and binocs, and certainly consider visiting during spring and summer if you have a particular interest in migrant species.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
