"Sister property to Chobe Under Canvas, Savute Under Canvas is located in the west of Chobe by the Savute Marsh. Known for epic lion viewing, this is an intense area and the camp is seriously fun! I absolutely love it."

OVERVIEW:

Savute Under Canvas is owned and run by &Beyond. This company operates a number of high-quality camps and lodges across Safari Africa, while doing its utmost to care for the land, wildlife, and local peoples. In common with sister camp Chobe Under Canvas, Savute Under Canvas moves every five days, so guests are always based as close as possible to the animal action! The price of your stay includes the accommodation, three meals daily, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, all safari activities, transfers between the camp and the nearest airstrip, and from June 2019 use of a pair of Swarovski Optik binoculars.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via 30 minutes’ to an hour’s road transfer from Savute’s airstrip, depending on its location at the time of your visit. It moves between several different sites within the Savute region of Chobe National Park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SAVUTE UNDER CANVAS:

There are five guest tents. All are Meru style – an exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner structure to create a private veranda. Here you’ll find a couple of safari chairs, a small table, and amazing views! The tent is entered through a zippered opening and has mesh windows. Inside, there’s a double bed or twin beds, bedside stands for battery-powered hurricane lighting, and a large storage trunk. Camp staff members provide a few useful items, such as insect repellent and spray. The en-suite facilities are accessed through a canvas partition behind the bedroom area, and they comprise flush toilet, jug-and-basin on top of a wooden vanity unit, and classic bucket shower! The shower is filled every evening after your day on safari, or on request. The washroom also contains a hanging unit, and dressing gowns, towels, a laundry bag, and basic toiletries are supplied.

Savute Under Canvas’s pleasant mess tent houses the camp’s dining area, where one large table is flanked by safari chairs. Everyone tucks into hearty breakfasts, lunches, and teas together here, enjoying dishes cooked over the open fire. The camp’s bar takes the form of a side table, laden with a good range of alcoholic and soft drinks in addition to a tea-and-coffee station. Another side table holds a few books and magazines. As the tent is open sided, you can marvel at the scenery while relaxing and dining. The campfire is usually set up just a short distance from the tent, and it provides an adventurous venue for getting to know your fellow travelers and sharing those safari stories! The great outdoors is often the setting for dinner too, with guests served by an attentive butler.

ACTIVITIES AT SAVUTE UNDER CANVAS:

The camp offers the following activities:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - Drives are the main activity here, taking place every morning and afternoon. Wherever you’re based during your time at Savute Under Canvas, you can expect to see a real wealth of wildlife! The Savute region stretches from the northern boundary of Chobe National Park as far as the Linyanti river, occupying in excess of 10,000 square kilometers. Featuring sprawling plains, woodlands, and the Savute Channel, the area is home to four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! Smaller predators include cheetah, hyena, and wild dog, while fans of herbivores can look out for giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and a fine assortment of antelopes. And if you’re here during green season, you might witness a migration of zebra from North Botswana!
  • Nature walks

    - If your stay coincides with the camp’s location near Gubatsa Hills, you can enjoy looking at some ancient rock paintings of elephant, giraffe, eland, and sable. Not far from the artworks, there’s an entire avenue of mighty baobabs! Simply being in the presence of these trees is a very memorable experience, as some are over 7 meters wide.
  • Birding

    - The Savute region boasts over 450 species of feathery friends! Just a few treats for birders include secretary bird, kori bustard, red-billed francolin, and, in April, impressive flocks of quelea finch.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
