"If a classic mobile tented camp is your style of property then look no further – Chobe Under Canvas will deliver every time. I love this property, especially due to the quality of &Beyond’s guides and operations as a whole. Just be careful in October, as the tents can get sweltering!"

OVERVIEW:

&Beyond Chobe Under Canvas is set up at secluded campsites in the wilderness alongside Chobe river, moving location every five days in order to comply with Chobe National Park’s camping regulations. This enables guests to explore completely different wildlife areas! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including three meals daily, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, all safari activities, transfers between the camp and the nearest airstrip, and use of Swarovski Optik binoculars (one set per room from June 2019). The camp is open from February to mid-December.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via road transfer from the nearest airstrip. It moves between various sites in the Chobe Northern Waterfront region, never far from the scenic Chobe river.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT CHOBE UNDER CANVAS:

There are just five safari tents, each accommodating a maximum of two guests. These are Meru style – an exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner structure to create a private veranda at the front. The veranda is set with a couple of safari chairs and a small table, and it’s a great spot for relaxing and enjoying your views! Entering the tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables for rechargeable lanterns, and a storage trunk. The en-suite washroom is positioned behind the bed, beyond a canvas wall, and it contains a separate flush toilet, a tin basin with water jug, a shaving mirror, and a classic bucket shower! Hot water is provided for the shower, and soaps are supplied free of charge.

The communal areas at Chobe Under Canvas are housed in an open-sided mess tent. In the dining area, there’s one large table flanked by safari chairs. Everyone eats together here, tucking in to delicious breakfasts, light lunches, and hearty dinners! The camp’s bar is set up conveniently close by, offering a variety of wines, beers, spirits, and soft drinks, as well as water. The mess tent also offers a small library and a few board games. A campfire is usually arranged just a short distance away, providing an alternative venue for eating, drinking, and sharing safari stories!

ACTIVITIES AT CHOBE UNDER CANVAS:

Chobe Under Canvas offers the following activities:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - Chobe National Park is a stunning area of Botswana, with its endless plains, beautiful broadleaf woodlands, riverine forest, and the Chobe river along with other water sources. Drives from camp take place during early morning and late afternoon. One major wildlife highlight you’ll enjoy is immense concentrations of elephant! But there are numerous additional mammal species here, not least lion, leopard, buffalo, spotted hyena, hippo, giraffe, blue wildebeest, zebra, and vervet monkey. And there are over 450 types of bird, including fish eagle, herons, and bee-eaters.
  • River cruises

    - A trip along the river, aboard an open-sided boat, presents thrilling opportunities to watch wildlife from a different perspective. In the company of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, you can look out for big game and smaller species alike quenching their thirst at the water’s edge, as well as a wealth of waterbirds. Cruises set off in late afternoon, in time for spectacular sunsets!
  • Photographic boat cruises

    - This activity is available for guests staying at least two consecutive nights at Chobe Under Canvas. The camp has a special boat for it, known as the Pangolin. The Pangolin comes complete with a high-quality camera for every traveler and of course a professional photographer, who’ll ensure you have some memorable photos to take home!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
