Sherrie Handley

Operations Executive

Meet Sherrie, an operations executive at YZ.

A Snapshot

Sherrie has 18 years’ experience in investment banking. More recently, she has worked for the NHS. Her experience in IT and data analysis helped her secure her present role. She really enjoys living vicariously through other people’s trips and getting to know even more about Africa, the continent she adores.

Sherrie's Biography

Since her childhood, Sherrie has had a genuine passion for African wildlife. She has always watched all the nature programmes, and hands down would say David Attenborough is her hero! Sherrie had the chance to visit Kenya in January 2014, and from then onwards she was hooked. She has since been to Kenya four times, South Africa twice, Zanzibar once, and just recently she returned from Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Sherrie has found that her interests have developed since her first safari. At first it was all about the ‘Big Five’. Now, however, she gets just as excited watching a hyena family! She also loves warthogs for their funny little ways, while buffalo are so intimidating ! Sherrie appreciates the scenery too, as well as the culture and the stars… and she has even started to recognise a few birds!

Most Memorable Experience

One of my best safari experiences was last year, when my husband and I drove up to Ol Pejeta in Kenya and went to the rhino sanctuary where the last three remaining southern white rhino were living. We met and fed Sudan, who was the last male of the species. Sadly he has since died, but I feel truly privileged that I got to meet him. The other standout moment was riding in a hot air balloon over the Maasai Mara – simply incredible! My favourite part of every day on safari is parking up, getting out, having a sundowner, and just taking it all in. But we’ve also had amazing bush breakfasts and picnics.

My husband and I like to hire a car (which is not always possible), and we’ve had some proper adventures bouncing around Kenya and South Africa. Wherever I am on safari, I am most definitely in my ‘happy place’.
