Ro

Safari Specialist

Ro has recently returned from just under two years’ living out in the wilds of Kenya supporting Elephant Watch Camp to managing the Elephant & Bees research camp.

a snapshot

She has been following her lifelong dream of working with African elephants, which led to a role supporting Saba Douglas-Hamilton in one of Africa’s most unique and special camps, Elephant Watch Camp, in Kenya’s remote northern reserve, Samburu.

Recent Travel Experience

Ro went on her first trip to Africa after university. It was a whistle-stop tour of South Africa led by one of her closest friends, who was born and raised in the Drakensberg. After this introduction, she was hooked on the continent and has been back almost every year since. In 2017 she followed her heart and quit the rat race to take on an internship with Save the Elephants, which began her love affair with Kenya.

Ro's Biography

Ro went from being an intern at Save the Elephants to managing the Elephants & Bees research camp, just outside Tsavo East National Park, where she worked with local communities constructing beehive fences to protect their farms from crop-raiding elephants. At the same time, Ro took every opportunity to venture into the park, spending hours with some of the last big tuskers in the world, and chancing upon her first leopard sighting.

Ro went on to take up a role at Elephant Watch Camp, and her background in business led to her being a huge asset at the camp, becoming Saba Douglas-Hamilton’s right-hand woman! She spent over a year living and breathing all things eco-focused, assisting with the management and operations of the camp and the various conservation initiatives with which the camp is involved, together with Save the Elephants, intrinsically linked with Elephant Watch.

Most Memorable Experience

Having lived at Elephant Watch Camp for over a year, it is difficult to choose just one experience, but it was the elephant encounters in the camp, which many of the resident bulls treat like home, that will always be the most special to me. The sight of a huge bull elephant crossing the path of your tent, lit up by an African full moon, is something that stays with you forever. Sharing these experiences with guests of the camp, when a resident bull causes you to vacate the lunch table as he slowly ambles through, picking off acacia pods from the tortilis trees, was such a pleasure. And having elephants drop by the office, leaving me trapped on the other side of camp with nothing to do but sit on the steps and enjoy the view, was definitely the best excuse for stepping away from the desk!

client reviews

"Ro was extremely helpful and very knowledgable in her approach to our honeymoon planning. She came up with some fantastic itinerary’s and tailored everything to our likes and taste. Highly recommend."
"This was my wife's and my first safari, even more our first international trip. We only had 10 days to experience as much as possible and truthfully minus 2days travel there and back really only left 6 days. I simply told Ro what I was looking to do/see and she made it happen. She set us up with beautiful camps, took care of all traveling needs including rides to, from and in between airports. Acquired us help getting through customs and obtaining our visa. Gave us tips and tricks to help with our trip. We literally had to do nothing but sit back and enjoy ourselves. That's exactly what we did. I feel like the crew at Yellow Zebra care about what they do, and the experience they set up for their clients."
"You could try and plan your safari yourself, but why? Yellow Zebra will take care of every detail so all you have to do is show up and enjoy your holiday. Our safari specialist Ro selected the very best migration camps for us in Kenya and Tanzania. Every detail was meticulously planned, from a midnight pick up at the airport to a balloon flight over the Serengeti. Ro was always available by phone or email. Her contact people met us at every stop to escort us through visa formalities, walk us to a waiting bush plane, drive us to camp, show us the equator signpost or take us to an elephant sanctuary. We have been to Africa many, many times but this was our first trip with YZ and we are already planning our next adventure with them. There is a reason why Yellow Zebra is Europe’s leading safari tour operator- they are simply amazing."
