Wilderness Safaris

Wilderness Safaris is a prestigious luxury eco-tourism company that was established in 1983. Each group of the 70 lodges and camps has its own identity, feel and character to fit the area it is in and the wildlife that inhabits it.

“We have shared a long-standing and rewarding relationship with Yellow Zebra over the years. It’s always a pleasure dealing with such an experienced team of people who are so passionate about Africa and knowledgeable how to sell it; they are always fun yet very professional. We look forward to growing our partnership in the future.”

It operates camps and safaris in Botswana, Congo, Kenya, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Seychelles. Wilderness Safaris aims at sustainable conservation through responsible tourism. They provide luxury safari experiences while helping to protect Africa's wildlife heritage, and sharing the benefits of tourism with the local communities of the camps in which they operate. Of the 2,800 staff who work for them, 85% come from neighbouring communities.

Yellow Zebra view

Wilderness Safaris is, along with Great Plains Conservation and Singita, one of our best high-end operators. It is particularly good in Botswana, offering a perfect balance between luxury and authenticity. Its flagship property is Mombo Camp in Botswana.

Wilderness camps:

Abu Camp

Abu Camp is one of Africa’s best-known camps, offering some of the finest elephant encounters on the planet.

Chitabe Camp

Chitabe Camp is widely regarded as one of Okavango’s finest game-viewing camps.

Chitabe Lediba

Chitabe Lediba is located in the South east of the Okavango Delta. It is the sister camp to the nearby Chitabe and is located in the fantastic private Chitabe Reserve – one of our favourite all year round game drive areas.

Duma Tau Camp

Game drives here guarantee exclusivity and game viewing is consistently excellent during the dry season. At this time, predators and elephant are numerous.

Jao Camp is located in the Jao Reserve, a private reserve that’s one of the most naturally beautiful parts of the entire Okavango Delta.

Kalahari Plains

This simple tented camp is laid out on the edge of an enormous pan, offering fantastic views and great game viewing from your tent during the summer months.

Kings Pool Camp

Designed to look over the floodplains of the Linyanti into Namibia, Kings Pool is an absolutely stunning camp with a superb location and a lodge standard to match – the suites here comprise some of the most sumptuous rooms in Africa.

Raised into the surrounding canopy of trees, Kwetsani is one of Botswana’s only tree camps.

Little Mombo Camp

Little Mombo Camp is located on the north-west tip of Chief’s Island, in the Moremi Game Reserve.

Little Tubu

Small, exclusive and very high quality, Little Tubu offers great wet and dry safaris for much of the year. Easy access onto Hundu Island gets the game where as Jao’s waterways and deeper channels are also close by. Yet another superb Wilderness Safaris property.

Little Vumbura

Situated in the private Vumbura Concession in the north of the Okavango Delta, stunning Little Vumbura Camp is widely regarded as one of the Okavango’s finest small camps.

Mombo Camp

Winner of numerous safari and hospitality accolades, home to outstandingly beautiful accommodation, offering simply unbelievable game viewing… Mombo presents an absolutely pristine safari environment.

This famous camp has a tangible character along with excellent guiding and game viewing. Savuti retains an intimate charm that is the envy of other camps. We think it’s hard to match!

Seba Camp

Seba Camp is perfect for children, with family rooms, a sandy beach, swimming pools and plenty of activities to teach them about the bush.

The largest property in the Selinda Reserve but one that still retains an exclusive charm and very high levels of service and safari experience overall. Excellent game viewing and service overall…guiding is especially good here.

Tubu Tree

One of the reasons we love Tubu is that the camp feels so isolated. Another reason is Tubu’s easy access to the best game-driving area in the reserve. This camp offers high-quality game viewing in peak flood season, compared to the remainder of the water-filled Jao flats.

Vumbura Plains

Vumbura Plains Camp is the flagship of the Vumbura Concession and one of Africa’s most luxurious safari camps. It’s also one of Africa’s most expensive properties.

The camp sits on a small island in a beautiful flooded area surrounded by deep channels and lush vegetation. The 10 tented rooms are raised on platforms and have wonderful views of the lagoon and surrounding floodplains.

Pelo is one of our favourite adventure camps in the Okavango. Run by one of Africa’s most experienced safari operators this camp offers great value in a park known for extremely high prices.

Busanga Bush Camp

Busanga is a lovely no-frills bush camp that epitomises the spirit of this adventurous national park. Located to the north-west of Busanga Plains, it is an exciting camp that is fairly simple yet also very high end.

Shumba Camp is located in the heart of Busanga Plains in the north of the Park. Originally a bush camp run by the outdoorsy safari company Busanga Trails, Shumba has changed completely from its original rustic design – the camp is now raised onto decking and is home to six luxury suites.

River Club

The River Club sits on the edge of Zambezi River, approximately 20 minutes’ drive upstream from Victoria Falls. It is one of the most expensive yet highest-quality lodges in the region.

Toka Leya

Toka Leya is very similar to many of the Wilderness Safaris' Botswana camps and is just as efficiently run. It is located on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls - just 20 minutes' drive from Livingstone.

North Island

We recommend North Island to travellers who are keen to sample all the splendours of the Seychelles. This truly is the best of barefoot luxury!

Andersson's Camp

The Swedish explorer Charles Andersson discovered the Etosha Pan in 1851. This family-friendly property has taken his name and consists of a delightful lodging in an old farmstead just 8km inside the private Ongava Reserve.

Damaraland Camp

Situated half way up one side of the Huab River Valley, Damaraland Camp has wonderful views of the desert plains and the Huab River Valley. Its 10 tented rooms are made of adobe and thatch and each have an ensuite bathroom.

Desert Rhino Camp

Located in northern Damaraland, Rhino Camp sits in the private Palmwag concession. This is one of the finest rhino viewing areas in Africa.

Kulala Desert Lodge

Kulala Desert Lodge is located in the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. The concession has the only private entrance into Sossusvlei, giving this camp the advantage of avoiding the crowds that enter through the park's main entrance.

Little Kulala

Little Kulala overlooks a waterhole visited by animals such as gemsbok, jackal, aardwolf, and ostrich. Not only is it the most luxurious camp in Sossusvlei, but also the most expensive.

Little Ongava

Little Ongava is located in the private Ongava Reserve, adjacent to the southern border of Namibia’s Etosha National Park. Set at the top of a hill, it has a jaw-dropping location. The rooms and the main area all have uninterrupted views as far as the eye can see.

Ongava Lodge is one of three camps in the private Ongava Reserve, adjacent to the southern border of Namibia’s Etosha National Park.

Ongava Tented Camp

This classic tented camp has a superb location looking directly out over an active waterhole – it is one of the most active camps in terms of game viewing that we know – it is common to share dinners with rhino here!

Serra Cafema

This is one of the most remote camps we work with. Approximately 250 kilometres from the closest village, this camp is in the middle of nowhere – a no-man's-land where nomadic tribes live off one of the most arid landscapes on the planet.

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp has a fabulous location in the northern part of the Palmwag Concession – it sits in a broad valley where two tributaries of the dry Hoanib River meet.

Rocktail Beach Camp

Rocktail Beach Camp is best described as a rustic beach lodge with top-quality service. The lodge is located in a coastal forest, about a 25-minute walk from the beach. The lodge is set in Maputaland Coastal Forest, which covers the ancient dunes and forms the edge of the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
