Uganda in March

March

March heralds the beginning of the long rainy season, bringing lush landscapes, calving season for many herbivores, and plenty of migratory bird species.

What’s the weather going to be like in Uganda in March?

  • Days are comfortably warm
  • It’s the start of the long rainy season – rain is unlikely to continue all day long but it can come in heavy downpours, and it’s usually followed by brighter weather
  • Temperatures are pleasant
  • Don’t forget to pack your waterproofs!

What are the highlights of visiting Uganda in March?

  • March is low season, so there are plenty of lodges available
  • Rates are relatively low
  • Parks are lush and green from the rain
  • There are lots of opportunities for wonderful wildlife viewing at this time of year, in safari areas such as Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Animals are giving birth to their young, so travellers have the chance to see lots of newborns roaming about
  • Gorilla treks are usually shorter as there is a lot of food for the mammals on the lower slopes of the mountains
  • Amakula Kampala International Film Festival takes place between 14th and 17th March, showcasing a mix of classic and modern movies
  • March is a great month for seeing migratory birds
  • Murchison Falls has a drier climate, so it’s worth a visit during the rainy season
  • Keen photographers can take some spectacular snaps of wildlife in many parks and reserves.

Any lowlights?

  • Not all properties remain open throughout the long rainy season
  • The roads are often in bad condition, so journeys can be uncomfortably bumpy
  • Thicker vegetation can make game viewing more challenging
  • Trekking becomes harder as the terrain becomes wet and muddy
  • None of Uganda’s parks are at their best during the rainy season
  • Mosquitoes are more prevalent in the forests of Bwindi, Kibale and Murchison National Park.
