Uganda in December

December is a dry-season month, with wildlife starting to gather around decreasing water sources and spectacular sights of migratory birds.

What’s the weather going to be like in Uganda in December?

  • Days are generally dry and sunny with occasional rainfall
  • It’s the start of the short dry season, and the short rains have usually stopped by now
  • Temperatures are warm, but nights can be cool
  • It’s worth packing a waterproof, and a jumper for the cooler evenings.

What are the highlights of visiting Uganda in December?

  • All parks are accessible during the dry season
  • Wildlife tends to congregate around a few water sources, so this is a terrific time for boat safaris
  • It’s a great month for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, as the ground underfoot is dry and easy to traverse
  • The bush is starting to dry up, making for excellent game viewing opportunities
  • December is brilliant for birdwatchers, as most of the migrant bird species have arrived in parks and reserves
  • Landscapes are lush and green, making for the perfect backdrop for photographs.

Any lowlights?

  • Properties book up quickly, so YZ recommends sorting out your accommodation well in advance
  • It’s peak season, which means higher rates
  • Gorilla permits sell out quickly, so you’ll need to book these a few months before you travel
  • December is one of the busiest months of the year, as both Western and Ugandan families are on holiday
  • This is not the best month to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park, as wildlife opportunities are limited
  • Mosquitoes are present in forest areas like Bwindi and Kibale.
