Silverback Lodge Marasa has a fabulous location and offers a wonderful range of activities in addition to gorilla tracking!

OVERVIEW:
Silverback Lodge is the newest addition to the portfolio of Marasa Africa, a company that owns and operates a total of seven superb properties across East Africa, and is situated in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi, only 5 minutes’ walk from the national park. It is suitable for solos, couples, honeymooners, and groups, but children cannot be accommodated here.

ACCESS & LOCATION:
The property is accessed from various airstrips, including Entebbe and Kajjansi. Visitors also drive from Kamapala or Queen Elizabeth National Park. Silverback has a commanding position on top of a valley overlooking Bwindi Impenetrable N.P., within grounds laid to hedged lawns and a few trees. A few steps lead up onto a communal deck containing rattan chairs and ornate tables – here you have breathtaking views across the valley to the wooded hills beyond!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
Inside the main lodge, there is a comfy lounge and a fairly homely dining room, in addition to a bar. Silverback has a spa too, which offers a range of treatments including reflexology and aromatherapy massage.

Guest accommodation here consists of 12 rooms set within one long brick-and-stone building. Of these, one is single, four are doubles, and seven are twins. The furnishings are simple yet comfortable, featuring easy chairs, African artwork on the walls, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, washbasin, and walk-in shower. Outside, each tent has a private seating area, where you can relax and marvel at the amazing views!

ACTIVITIES:
The main activity available from Silverback is tracking the mountain gorillas! Presently Bwindi is home to 320 mountain gorillas, among them 11 habituated groups. The park covers 321 square kilometres of forest-clad hills and mountains, intersected by a network of streams. Hiking through the region in search of the gorillas is a thrilling experience, and being able to observe them in their territory is a real privilege. Silverback also offers nature walks – four hiking trails lead around the park, showcasing not only the primates but also the trees, birds, and butterflies of Bwindi. The Waterfall Trail is one of the most popular routes, but all have something special about them.

You can also enjoy a village walk, which is arranged by the local community and involves banana beer brewing and a visit to the village healer! Mountain bikes are available for hire, and you can even take a 2-hour drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park for such sights as tree-climbing lion, leopard, elephant, and chimps. All activities are led by knowledgeable and experienced guides, keen to ensure you see as much of the area – and the gorillas – as possible.
