"Another of the Volcanoes portfolio lodges. Kyambura Gorge Lodge is by some distance the most luxurious option in Queen Elizabeth National Park. With easy access to Kyambura Gorge itself, the Kazinga Channel, and excellent game-viewing areas, this superb lodge makes for the perfect base from which to take advantage of everything that this park has to offer."

OVERVIEW:

As its name suggests, this lodge is situated close to Kyambura Gorge. The property is owned and operated by Volcanoes Safaris, which has run camps and lodges across Uganda and Rwanda since 1997. Kyambura Gorge Lodge provides accommodation to suit most types of traveller, and its family banda may also be used by honeymooners hoping for a little extra privacy. Please note, chimpanzee tracking is available to guests aged 15 years and older, and the lodge has no childcare facilities. Nevertheless, children of all ages are welcome.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Kyambura Gorge Lodge is usually accessed via flight or road transfer from Entebbe International Airport. A village track leads to the property, which is set amidst garden grounds.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KYAMBURA GORGE LODGE:

The communal lodge is a mostly stone-and-timber structure, converted from an old coffee store. Inside, the décor is very modern and fresh. The lounge area provides plenty of comfortable seating around coffee tables and the dining area has communal or separate tables in addition to a bar. Both souvenirs and useful items are available for purchase in the gift shop, and the lodge offers charging stations and free Wi-Fi. All spaces flow out onto a terrace, where you can sit, eat, drink, and admire amazing views over the savanna of Queen Elizabeth National Park as far as the Rwenzori mountains, the so-called Mountains of the Moon. There is also a massage room and a saltwater swimming pool, perfect for cooling off in the heat of the day.

Guest accommodation at Kyambura Gorge Lodge consists of eight bandas, made out of timber and brick, with thatch or iron sheet roofs. Rather charmingly, each is named after a chimpanzee from the gorge. Two are doubles, five are twins, and one is designed for a family or honeymooners. Amenities include mosquito nets, bedside lighting, and well-appointed en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, twin washbasins, and shower with hot and cold running water. Each banda also benefits from a private veranda, where you can marvel at views of either the gorge or the sweeping savanna of Queen Elizabeth N.P.

ACTIVITIES AT KYAMBURA GORGE LODGE:

  • Game drives provide great opportunities to check out the wildlife of the national park. There is plenty to see here – almost a hundred species of mammal and 600 types of bird. The varied geography, ranging from savanna to swampland, is home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, chimpanzee, black-and-white colobus monkey, hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, topi, warthog, and giant forest hog. We particularly recommend looking out for the tree-climbing lions!
  • Chimpanzee tracking is available too, within the mysterious sunken forest of Kyambura Gorge.
  • You can take boat trips along the Kazinga Channel and hike up the Rwenzori mountains.
  • A lot of visits to local attractions are also possible – to the Katwe Salt Lakes, the Omwani coffee tour and café, and the Omumashaka wetland.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
