Forming part of Tanzania’s East Arc Rift valley, Mufindi offers a different type of holiday from classic safari. We recommend it for anyone who enjoys land- and watersports alike, in addition to opportunities for some superb wildlife viewing! Cultural experiences are available too.
Location
Mufindi occupies the Southern Highlands. It’s one of four districts within Tanzania’s Iringa region, which also contains the mighty Ruaha National Park! Mufindi District boasts one of the country’s coolest climates. It’s also pretty rainy here at times.
History
This region is famed for two industries – timber and tea. In 1986 a working farm was developed from a parcel of land purchased by the Fox family. Over time the farm evolved into Mufindi Highland Lodge, effectively opening the area to tourism.
Safari wildlife in Mufindi
Mufindi is characterised by rolling hills, covered in tea and timber plantations and beautiful natural rainforest. The rainforest is home to monkeys and plenty of birdlife. Among the region’s specials is Livingstone’s turaco, a handsome blue-and-green feathery friend named after David Livingstone’s brother Charles. This species is hard to miss, due to its strident tones!

Time/s of year to travel
It’s possible to travel to Mufindi all year round, but the top months to visit are from June to October inclusive. This is during dry season, with clear skies making for great visibility and ideal conditions for activities! May and November are good, whereas December through to April can be mixed due to the long rainy season. That said, the wet months are fantastic for keen botanists, due to gorgeous displays of plants and flowers.
