Tanzania’s Nyerere National Park offers very good vehicle safari, but nothing quite matches the boat safari on offer in this park. Floating down the mighty Rufiji River surrounded by the park’s wildlife, is one of Tanzania’s finest safari activities.

We have long been fans of this lesser-known Reserve, with the boating safari playing a major role in the park’s attraction to visitors. There are very few places in Africa where you can get as comfortably close to the continent’s water life. Whereas many of Tanzania’s game parks offer seriously good big-game safari, the activities on offer in the country’s main National Parks are limited to game driving and short walks. Boat safari offers travellers a completely different style of experience.

We have always supported Lake Manze since it first set up. This little camp is a real favourite, offering superb boat safari on Lake Manze itself, and great value safari overall. Slightly more expensive is Siwandu Camp. Loved by the honeymoon market for the comfort on offer here, Siwandu is a great mid-priced option – arguably the best value in the park. At the top end of the market is Sand Rivers. Located on the banks of the Rufiji itself, there is no better camp for boating safari in Tanzania – this one is a real gem.
