OVERVIEW:
This is a very, outdoorsy camp which is perfect for anyone looking to experience some of the Maasai culture and explore by foot. It can be used as just a stop off when travelling between the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti or as a base for anyone looking to experience a different side to Northern Tanzania.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Olduvai Tented Camp sits just south of the Serengeti border in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is the only camp in Olduvai Gorge and is just a 40 minute drive from the Ngorongoro Crater. The game is particularly good here from January to March, when the Great Migration passes through.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT OLDUVAI CAMP:
The camp is built around a large kopje (rocky outcrop). Like its sister lodge, Mawe Ninga, it is run in partnership with the local Maasai . The seventeen tents encircle the kopje , and have decks overlooking the surrounding plains. They are made of canvas with thatch roofs, concrete floors and bathrooms with flush toilets, a basin and shower. Two thatched rondevaals are home to the lounge and restaurant and there is a large open fire pit outside where guests can gather to talk to each other and learn about the local culture from the Maasai guides.
ACTIVITIES AT OLDUVAI CAMP:
- Activities include walking safaris across the plains of the southern Serengeti, game drives and a trip to Olduvai museum.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
