"A reliable option in Arusha and one of the town’s oldest properties. With black colobus monkeys in camp, the experience and location has character. A decent option for a good price; good service but not outstanding!"

OVERVIEW:

Mt. Meru Game Lodge and its wildlife sanctuary were established in 1959, by Dr Andreas Von Nagy, a wildlife collector. Dr Von Nagy passed away in 1994, but the property has continued to be run by members of his family. It has been visited by a number of presidents and royal families, and has been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence! The accommodation is usually booked on a half-board basis, including breakfast, lunch/dinner, parking, and Wi-Fi. A laundry service is available at extra cost.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge is situated between the River Usa and the on-site wildlife sanctuary. It can be approached via 30 minutes’ road transfer from either Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport. The grounds, featuring well-kept lawns and mature trees, are very popular with birdlife!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MOUNT MERU GAME LODGE:

Guest accommodation consists of 17 guest rooms. The first of these was constructed in 1961! There are 13 double rooms, two single rooms, one triple room, and one room for family use. All are dotted about the grounds. The majority provide a private veranda, accessed via a few steps up from ground level. Every double room features a super-king-size bed with mosquito netting, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, grass mats on the red cement floor, and wildlife artwork. The twin rooms have spacious twin beds, while the triple can also function as a family unit. The family room has an extra bedroom, and a separate seating area with a cosy fireplace. Each en-suite washrooms contains a flush toilet, a washbasin with mirror over, and a shower cubicle. The lodge supplies towels, shampoo, and shower gel.

Mt. Meru Game Lodge’s communal lounge, dining room, and bar are housed in a large bungalow, which is linked to the guest rooms along neat stone paths. Just three steps lead up into this structure, and there’s a ramp for wheelchair users or travellers with limited mobility. The lounge, entered through a wooden arch, features leather sofas around a tree-trunk coffee table, a welcoming fireplace, and a few intriguing artefacts. In the dining room, separate tables are beautifully laid with crisp cloths and flanked by cushioned seating. The bar has a long line of stools as well as a selection of comfortable couches and armchairs. Views from the lodge include the gardens and the property’s sanctuary, complete with wildlife! Guests can also marvel at the scenery from the terrace, and the swimming pool is fabulous for a refreshing dip. There’s a campfire area too, which is a great setting for social gatherings. Throughout your stay, attentive staff are on hand to see to your every need.

ACTIVITIES AT MOUNT MERU GAME LODGE:

The lodge offers an exciting range of activities.

  • You could begin by visiting the sanctuary and getting to know some of its occupants – these include zebra, colobus and other types of monkey, ostrich, and numerous smaller birds!
  • Coffee tours are also available, involving trips to local smallholder farmers based on the scenic slopes of Mount Meru. You can watch the production process, and purchase some delicious coffee yourself!
