“We are yet to see this new tented lodge, but we know the team behind it well. They usually offer good-value safari camps that are no frills. But this looks set to be much more luxurious and the price is comparable to some of the best lodges we know in this area - though we don't know if it will be comparable quality. Currently, we have other camps in this price category that we have known for longer and would rather recommend.”

OVERVIEW:

Mara Mara Tented Lodge offers luxury accommodation under canvas, in a wildlife-rich area of the Serengeti. The team behind this camp usually offer lower-end accommodation - so we are interested to see what their first high-end property will deliver. And from July to October, guests can look out for the Great Migration on game drives!

Mara Mara Tented Lodge is owned and run by Tanganyika Wilderness Camps. This company operates mid-range properties across the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Kilimanjaro, and Tarangire. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and Wi-Fi. Unusually for this part of the Serengeti, shared activities cannot be included, so people visiting this camp will either need to drive up with their own private vehicle and guide, or hire a private guide and vehicle from the camp.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge can be accessed via 10 minutes’ road transfer from Kogatende Airstrip; alternatively, safarists could drive up from the South Serengeti. Mara Mara is situated on a hilltop within the northern region of the park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MARA MARA TENTED LODGE:

Guest accommodation consists of 16 tents, divided into North Camp and South Camp. Each tent is made out of canvas and raised above ground level on timber decking. Inside, you’ll find a spacious bedroom, with a double bed or twin beds, bedside stands and solar-powered lighting, storage space, and a pleasant seating area. There is complimentary mineral water – and room service is available too. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin, shower, and a bathtub with a view! You can also sit and look out into the North Serengeti scenery from your private balcony, accessed from the bedroom and complete with a small table and a couple of safari chairs.

The communal lounge and dining areas at Mara Mara Tented Lodge occupy a large tent each. The lounge tent features wood-framed well-cushioned seating around coffee tables, and a few board games. In the dining tent, there’s one long table where everyone eats together. Guests can also relax and dine on the viewing deck, while watching out for local wildlife. Bush dining is possible too, weather permitting. The lodge has a campfire that’s great for getting to know your fellow travellers and sharing safari stories – and there’s an inviting-looking swimming pool.

ACTIVITIES AT MARA MARA TENTED LODGE:

Mara Mara Tented Lodge offers some exciting activities:

  • Game drives

    – The northern region of the Serengeti National Park is a fabulous year-round destination for wildlife watching, with the area’s sprawling plains, woodlands, and water sources supporting a wide variety of species. Among the mammals in residence are all of the Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! You can also look out for smaller predators and herbivores, such as cheetah, hyenas, jackals, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and a fine assortment of antelopes. Drives usually take place in the early morning and late afternoon, although you might like to arrange full-day game drives as well.
  • Great Migration viewing

    – Stay at the lodge during the period from July to October, and you’ll enjoy opportunities to view the world-famous Great Migration! The Serengeti’s dry season sees the huge herds of wildebeest and zebra, push up through the northern part of the park as far as Kenya’s Maasai Mara in their search for food. You could even witness the dramatic Mara river crossings that take place at this time.
  • Hot air balloon safaris

    – This experience is highly recommended for anyone interested in a bird’s-eye view of the Serengeti. Ascending just before sunrise, you’ll spend an hour drifting over the park and watching the wildlife, finally coming down to a delicious bush breakfast! This activity always incurs an extra cost and is usually best booked in advance, so please speak with us about adding it to your itinerary.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
