"Offering so much more than just game drives, this captivating little camp makes a longer stay in Manyara well worthwhile, especially if you’re active or are travelling as a family!"

OVERVIEW:

Lake Manyara is one of the first stops on a classic northern Tanzania circuit, a delightful first taste of the region’s beautiful landscape and home to some interesting and diverse game viewing opportunities. Due to their brilliant green ethos, Wayo Manyara is only the second lodge to be allowed to open within the park. This gives you early access to safari before it gets busy, and a delightful calm descends as you have the park to yourself as the sun sets and day trippers have to leave! Manyara is famous for its tree climbing lion, hippo pools and magnificent flamingo populations. You have to push quite far into the park to get a chance to see this specialised lion, so being already lodged within the park gives you a great head start. Like all Wayo properties, their choice of location is second to none and away from the crowds. Just set back from a dry riverbed with beautiful views, this simple yet elegant camp offers great value, supreme location and a warm welcome. An impressive list of activities, including the fantastic treetop canopy walks which we thoroughly recommend, also sets them apart. This camp brings Manyara to life like never before!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is beautifully located in a secluded southern part of Lake Manyara NP, overlooking a semi-dry riverbed and with views of a waterfall from the River Endabash as it thunders over the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment. One of the greatest features of the property is the strong numbers of animals that come to this river to drink. It’s one of the few water sources for miles around and attracts plenty of elephant and buffalo, all visible from camp.

Wayo Manyara can be accessed via a one and a half hour road transfer from Lake Manyara Airstrip, or if you’re coming from Arusha it’s approximately three hours. These can take a little longer because once you’re inside the park you’re essentially game viewing; and your driver/guide will stop if there’s something exciting happening!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WAYO MANYARA GREEN CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of eight large, recently upgraded tents (with stargazing options through your roof!), all positioned on top of decking made from sustainable teak. Room features include comfortable double or twin beds with fine linen, bedside tables and lighting, luggage racks. Everything is tastefully designed to be luxurious yet simple, as befitting Wayo’s eco-ethos. At the front of every tent you have a private veranda, with table and chairs - a great spot for relaxing and enjoying your views! The washing facilities are set up next to the tents, and every unit has a flush toilet, a washbasin and a classic bucket shower with complimentary shampoo and conditioner. Again, in keeping with the low ecological footprint, rainwater is collected for use in camp and all electricity comes from solar panels. They also have a family tent arrangement where you can have two tents adjoining with an enclosed walkway, great for families with older children.

Manyara Green Camp’s communal lounge and dining areas are united in a pleasant mess tent, with plenty of comfortable seating. This flows out onto a veranda where you can socialise with fellow guests and is also a great location for watching the local wildlife - with lion, elephant, zebra, buffalo and occasionally a mischievous hyena often seen nearby! In the dining area guests eat together, but meals are frequently enjoyed in charming al fresco areas dotted around camp to make the most of the views. Private dining is available on request and the food is very good, with fresh produce being whipped up by the resident chef. There’s also a great fire-pit (the hub of any safari camp!) where guests can gather for pre-dinner drinks to swap safari stories of the day’s action.

ACTIVITIES AT WAYO MANYARA GREEN CAMP:

The camp is uniquely placed to offer the best of what Lake Manyara National Park has to offer. Being set well within the park is an entirely different experience to dipping briefly in and out, which is what most people do! With its famous lions, flamingos, and the largest population of baboons anywhere in the world, this is definitely a park in which to spend a little more time.

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - Two game sessions a day, morning and late afternoon. Among the highlights are tree-climbing lion, elephant, hyena and baboons. The large herbivore collection features giraffe, hippo, buffalo, wildebeest and zebra to name a few. There is also fantastic birdlife in the park, including the rare Palmnut Vulture.
  • Walking safaris and Hiking

    - Head out into the bush with an armed guide. As well as animal tracking and the area’s phenomenal birdlife, take a closer look at the reserve’s insects and plant life. Different levels and distances depend on the ages of your group. Classic walking safari has a 12 year old age limit. They also offer a full day’s hike for the intrepid who might fancy a walk to the top of the rift escarpment! Gin and tonics and comfortable seating while watching the elephants come to drink, are also available in camp.
  • Night drives

    - Head out at night when all the big predators come alive. Always an unforgettable experience watching what goes on in the dark of the night! You might see porcupines, genets, civets, bush-babies…and occasionally a larger predator with its prey.
  • Cultural trips and Mountain bikes

    - Visit the local village of Mto Wa Mbu and meet the locals and see their way of life: always a rewarding thing to do. This is located a short drive just outside the park near the main gate. You can chat with the staff at camp about when is the best time to do this. It is also possible to rent bikes and do this on two wheels if you’d like to since you’re outside the park boundary.
  • Canopy walks

    - This is a really unique and entertaining trip - walking along the Lake Manyara Treetop Walkway. Intersecting wooden walkways take you high up into the trees and you can see the forest from a different perspective. Watch monkeys leaping between trees, become taller than a giraffe, and see elephants from above as they make their way through the undergrowth.
  • Canoeing

    - Take a trip and actually get out on Lake Manyara itself! Excellent for families, this happens beyond the park boundary where there is much less animal activity. Maybe combine it with the village tour, but chat to one of our specialists about how to make the most of your time vis a vis excursions.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
