“We haven’t yet visited Kokoko Camp, but given the quality of Asilia’s other Tanzania properties, we’re confident it will deliver an excellent product for the experienced and adventurous safari enthusiast.”

OVERVIEW:

Operated by Asilia, Kokoko Camp is a simple, exclusive-use tented camp in the heart of Tanzania’s south-central Ruaha National Park. Here, the surrounding wilderness takes front row, with a comfortable back-to-nature approach, including meals cooked outside over an open fire. Positioned on the edge of a forest overlooking the dry Mwagusi river, Kokoko captures the essence of safari in one of Tanzania’s most wildlife-rich and relatively unexplored regions. The camp is open during the dry season months from July to October, and rates include full-board accommodation, all house drinks (except champagne), private vehicle and guide for game drives, night drives, walking safaris, transfers to/from the nearest airstrip, and a limited laundry service.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Kokoko Camp is located in the northern part of Ruaha, Tanzania’s second-largest national park. Its rugged terrain is known for exceptional wildlife and diverse, dramatic landscapes with an adventurous, off-the-beaten-track feel. Remote, dry, and extremely hot, Ruaha National Park is ideal for safari enthusiasts seeking an authentic bush experience in an area explored by relatively few. The closest airstrip is Msembe, which is a 45-minute drive from the camp.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KOKOKO CAMP:

Three comfortable, understated tents made of mosquito net mesh accommodate a maximum of six guests on an exclusive-use basis, with shaded outdoor seating areas and retractable canvas roofs for stargazing. Each has the option of a double or twin beds, as well as a safety deposit box and an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet, hand basin, and outdoor bucket shower.

The emphasis is on cooking meals outside over an open fire and dining al fresco, in nature. You can expect communal story-telling, night-time stargazing, and a warm, hospitable team who’ll come to feel like friends. Kokoko Camp is modelled on an expedition camp philosophy, where guests embrace nature and life’s simple pleasures. While the camp encourages you to disconnect and embrace bush life, limited Wi-Fi is available.

ACTIVITIES AT KOKOKO CAMP:

Kokoko Camp offers walking and vehicle safaris designed for the adventurous wildlife enthusiast.

  • Walking safaris

    – These are led by one of Asilia’s top wildlife guides and can be tailored to specific interests, such as birding or geology.
  • Expertly guided game drives

    – Dominated by the Great Ruaha River, the park supports a diverse wildlife population and a spectacular array of birds. Its rugged landscape combines grasslands with undulating hills and giant ancient baobabs. Highlights include elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, and leopard, with potential sightings of wild dog, cheetah, and both spotted and striped hyenas.
  • Night drives

    – Drives by night, in open-sided vehicles, offer encounters with elusive nocturnal species, accompanied by the thrilling sounds of the African bush.
  • Hot-air balloons

    – Take to the sky in a hot-air balloon for aerial views of the plains and their towering baobab trees.
  • Picnics

    – Spend the whole day out in the bush with a picnic lunch for uninterrupted game-viewing time.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
