"This is one of my favourite options in Joburg. Its super-quirky design is both unique and fun, with no two rooms being the same. It’s also very well run and great value!"

The Residence Boutique Hotel is situated in Johannesburg’s wealthy Houghton Estate, north-east of the city centre. It is a very high quality boutique hotel, perfect for a super-luxurious stop-off or a fabulous few days exploring the city!

Most travellers access the hotel via road transfer from Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport, a distance of about 35 kilometres. Alternatively, a shuttle service is available, using a Rolls or a Mercedes. The Residence Boutique Hotel stands at No 17, 4th Avenue Houghton, a contemporary structure within well-kept grounds. There is ample space for parking.

The communal areas include a boat lounge, where comfy seating and a cosy fireplace entice you to relax, surrounded by nautical heirlooms! The piano bar offers a sophisticated meeting place for pre-dinner drinks, with its chandeliers and leather chairs. Chandeliers adorn the ceiling of the dining room too, which is a very elegant space in which to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Private dining, for up to 18 persons, is available in the ballroom, which contains a long table flanked by comfortable chairs. The nautical theme resurfaces in the form of pictures of boats on the walls! Business clients are well served by the conference room, also accommodating a maximum of 18 visitors, while anyone in need of a little pampering will love The Residence’s serene spa complete with hydro steam room and sauna. And the gym, tennis courts, and three swimming pools are perfect for fitting in a little exercise!

Guest accommodation at The Residence Boutique Hotel comes in a grand total of seven categories – Luxury Room, One Bedroom Suite, Luxury Suite, Madiba Suite, Penthouse, Pool Villa, and The Residence Villa. All options are very well appointed! The Luxury Room benefits from full air conditioning, satellite television, a DVD player, a docking station, free Wi-Fi, a Nespresso machine with free pods, a mini-bar, and an outdoor shower. Step up a level, and each suite option provides all the amenities of the Luxury Room in addition to a separate lounge, a Jacuzzi, a patio dining area, and, in two of the suites, a fireplace and a sauna. The Penthouse boasts all the features of the suite options, as well as double doors onto a roof garden! And both villa categories offer a heated pool. The Residence Villa contains five rooms, so it is worth considering if you are travelling as a large group, of either family members or friends.

From this ultra-luxurious base, it is possible to spend many a happy hour exploring the vibrant city of Johannesburg! The Residence Boutique Hotel provides its shuttle service between the hotel and a host of tourist attractions.

  • The famous Soweto Township and Apartheid Museum is well worth a visit – it’s considered the world’s best museum for its presentation of twentieth-century Africa. History buffs might also like to check out the Mandela Museum, while arty types will love Jo-burg’s main art gallery!
  • The shopping centres of Melrose Arch and Rosebank never fail to impress even the most seasoned shopaholic, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants for sampling both local and international cuisine.
  • Families staying for more than one night might like to take a trip to Gold Reef City, a theme park offering insights into 1880s mining life as well as exciting roller coasters and water rides!
