"Featuring stunning views over Bushman’s river, this modern property offers guests a magical wildlife experience in the Eastern Cape."

Sarili Lodge is a seriously stylish property and a great option for families! We tend to recommend it particularly to families with slightly older children, from age 8 upwards – Riverdene is better suited to younger children. Sarili is also very good for groups, with or without children.

Sarili Lodge is situated amid the open plains in the south region of Shamwari Game Reserve.

The lodge comprises a generously proportioned stone-and-thatch structure with contemporary interiors. The communal areas include two lounges, one with seating set around a fireplace and the other with sofas facing bookshelves and a flatscreen satellite TV. Internet access is available from the business desk and a Wi-Fi connection covers all main areas and guest rooms. There is also a delightfully unpretentious dining room with sliding glass doors onto a dining deck. Outside, there is a courtyard, plus further decking for other dining areas and for sunloungers surrounding a lovely saltwater swimming pool! The swimming pool has a shallow end for children and a deep end of just 1.5m.

Guest accommodation at Sarili consists of four Luxury Rooms and one Suite. Of the rooms, two boast a balcony overlooking Bushman’s River and two have a patio facing into the communal courtyard and are able to connect via a passageway. The suite also has a balcony, with breathtaking views of the river! All accommodation options are air conditioned and feature underfloor heating, IDD telephone, TV with satellite channels, tea- and coffee-making facilities, mini bar, electronic safe, hairdryer, and en-suite bathroom with separate shower. The style, like that of the main areas, is cool contemporary – plenty of clean lines and modern furnishings.

*For families with children under the age of 6 years, we always request a ground floor or courtyard bedroom for safety reasons.

Sarili offers an excellent assortment of activities.

  • Game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, for approximately three hours and with coffee/tea and sundowners respectively en route. There is loads of wildlife in the game reserve – all Big Five animals, plus a vast range of antelope species, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, wild dog, hyena and hippo!
  • Keen birders are in their element here, as there are impressive populations of raptors and waterbirds in addition to species for whom the grasslands are home, such as hoopoe, oxpeckers and colourful starlings.
  • It is possible to arrange game walks and nature walks, presenting the opportunity for guests to get to know Shamwari really well!
  • However, families with very young children might like to note that those aged under 4 years are not permitted on safari activities.
  • Children of all ages are allowed access to three local wildlife centres, though, provided under-4’s are accompanied at all times by an adult.
  • These centres are Shamwari Rehabilitation Centre, where young, orphaned, injured or abandoned animals are nurtured back to health; the Dr Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre, where guests learn about endeavours to conserve the majestic creatures; and the Born Free Foundation Animal Research & Education Centre, which focuses on the exploitation of wildlife in captivity.
