"Unpretentious, affordable, and also award winning! This is the perfect stopover when exploring the famous Panorama route. Chris Harvie (owner) is an attraction in himself, as he is known to engage with his guests and share travel stories in the bar."

OVERVIEW:

Rissington Inn is the perfect place for travellers looking for a relaxed base from which to explore the Panorama Region and farther afield. Whether you come for a couple of days or a week or more, you are guaranteed a great time in this friendly farmhouse property!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Although Rissington Inn is only 1km from Hazyview, it feels much farther away due to its secluded location. Easily accessible by road from Johannesburg, Pretoria, and many other towns, the property is positioned at the end of a long tree-lined drive, bringing guests into the very heart of the lowveld.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT RISINGTON INN:

Once a tobacco farm, which failed due to annual hailstorms, Rissington stands proudly today as a delightful country lodge. Both its buildings and grounds have been very well renovated under the expert eye of owner Chris Harvie. The communal building has a thatch roof, creating a homely feel. Inside, there is a lovely lounge/library with plenty of comfortable furniture and an interesting assortment of reading material. Fresh flowers adorn tabletops and potted plants perch by whitewashed walls, on which there is some intriguing artwork. A large Persian rug adds to the home-from-home vibe. This room has a television too – and the position of the lounge/library adjacent to the restaurant makes it ideal for after-dinner coffee and chat. The restaurant itself is kitted out very smartly, with farmhouse-style chairs and tables of varying sizes and the same little touches of the lounge/library to make you feel at ease. The bar is also a great place to unwind – and it even has its own veranda, boasting amazing views over the lowveld. Finally, the property has a spacious swimming pool, perfect for taking a dip during the heat of the day!

The guest accommodation at Rissington Inn is divided into four categories: budget rooms, larger rooms, garden suites, and hillside suites. All contain comfy beds with 100 per cent cotton Percale sheets, a ceiling fan, a hairdryer, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and a mini-bar fridge. The décor is homely and unpretentious, with warm wood and splashes of colour here and there. Budget rooms have a queen-size bed, whereas larger rooms have a superking-size bed, a queen-size bed, or a combination of one queen and one single. Both types of room have en-suite facilities – shower room for budgets, bathroom for largers – and a private veranda or patio. The garden suites are situated under thatch roofs and amid plenty of trees and shrubs for cooling shade. Three are configured as a superking plus a single, one has a superking (aka the Honeymoon Suite), and the final two contain two queens each. All have air conditioning, a spacious seating area, a covered veranda, a Victorian bath, and a walled-off outside shower. Finally, the hillside suites are recommended for guests who would like lots of room and the very best views! Each has two bedrooms, two en-suite bathrooms featuring Victorian bathtub and outdoor shower, a super-spacious seating area, satellite television, a veranda, and a sun terrace too. The hillside suites share a separate swimming pool. One of the garden suites is suitable for wheelchair users and we feel that a lot of thought has gone into the accommodation overall!

ACTIVITIES AT RISINGTON INN:

Rissington Inn also provides an excellent assortment of activities! Staff members are happy to advise guests on places to visit and to make the bookings.

  • Among the recommended attractions are plenty of places to suit wildlife lovers: Kruger National Park, Hoedspruit Cheetah Breeding Project, Kapama Lodge (offering exhilarating night drives), Moholoholo Animal and Bird Rehabilitation Centre, Crocodile and Swadini Reptile Parks, and elephant walks, where you can enjoy interacting with the grey giants!
  • Keen hikers will appreciate the Fanie Botha Trail and many other routes through forests and plantations, while those who like fishing will relish trips to the Sabie River and Horseshoe Falls.
  • If swinging through trees is appealing to you, there is an aerial cable trail not far from the Hotel.
  • If you are mad for museums, you could check out Pilgrim’s Rest (a reconstructed mining town) in addition to various tours featuring Anglo-Boer and Voortrekker history. Travellers who like a little culture on holiday might consider fitting in an excursion to Shangana Cultural Village for the festivals of song and dance!
  • There are also farm tours – and of course there is the breathtaking beauty of the Panorama Region. Amazing views of Blyde River Canyon … vistas over the lowveld at God’s Window … the majesty of the Three Rondavels … the thrills of Bourke’s Luck Potholes – for spectacular scenery, the Region is very hard to beat!
