OVERVIEW:

Family owned and run, Londolozi Pioneer Camp is one of five properties located within the private Londolozi Reserve. It’s a very exclusive camp, and has been recognised as such by global association of deluxe hotels and restaurants Relais & Châteaux. Standards of food and drink, service, and guiding here are among the best in the Sabi Sands. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, two game drives daily, safari walks, one group yoga session daily at Founders Camp, the Cubs Den programme, transfers between camp and the Londolozi airstrip, and a laundry service. The camp can be booked on an exclusive basis and is open all year round. Children aged 6 years and older are welcome.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via road transfer from Londolozi’s airstrip. Situated farthest west of all five properties, it nestles amidst 500-years-old ebony trees on the banks of the River Sand.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT LONDOLOZI PIONEER CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of just three suites, made out of timber and thatch. All are elevated well above ground level on sturdy wooden stilts, and they interlink via glass sky walkways. The total amount of floor space within each suite is 138 square metres. In the bedroom, you’ll find a king-size bed or twin beds with mosquito netting, bedside tables and lighting, a rattan bench at the end of the bed/s, and a comfy rattan chair. The lounge features elegant seating around a glass-topped coffee table, as well as amazing views! And the spacious bathroom offers separate flush toilet, twin washbasins, step-up shower, and big bathtub. Sliding doors lead out on to a deck, which boasts shower and plunge pool! The suites are very well appointed overall, with amenities including air conditioning, room fans, telephone, internet access, mini-bar, safe, and hairdryer. For clients interested in booking the camp for exclusive use, the minimum number of guests accepted is six and the maximum is twelve.

Pioneer’s communal lounge, dining area, and bar are located within the camp’s pleasant lodge, another timber-and-thatch design that has the cosy feel of a bush home. In the open-plan space, comfortable sofas and armchairs surround padded benches, a large table is set with silverware and candelabras in readiness for delicious meals, and there’s a well-stocked bar. Numerous black-and-white photographs and map drawings adorn the walls, while objects such as explorer’s chests and a gramophone lend a sense of history and adventure. Just outside, there’s a deck where guests can enjoy al fresco dining, all the while marvelling at views over the Sand river. There’s also a swimming pool! And visitors to Pioneer have access to several of Londolozi Varty Camp’s communal facilities – the fitness centre, Healing House spa, boutique, Cubs Den kids club, and photographic studio.

ACTIVITIES AT LONDOLOZI PIONEER CAMP:

An excellent selection of activities is available.

  • Expertly guided game drives head out during early morning and late afternoon.
  • The private Londolozi Reserve covers 16,000 hectares of savanna, woodlands, and water sources.
  • All Big Five are in residence – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – and the reserve is renowned for big cat sightings!
  • Among the smaller predators here are cheetah, hyenas, jackals, and occasional wild dog, while the less hefty herbivore species include giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and ample antelopes.
  • Numerous hippopotamus may be sighted in the rivers, especially during the green season.
  • Throughout the year, there are hundreds of birds to spot, from raptors to waterbirds to songbirds.
  • If you’re a fan of feathery friends, we highly recommend Pioneer’s safari walks – and anyone interested in plant life and insect life will find plenty to occupy them on this activity too.
  • You can also go on a photographic safari, take a walk to the local village, and visit the local community to find out what it’s like to live in the Sabi Sands.
  • Neighbouring camp Founders offers yoga, and Varty provides lots of things to do for kids through its Cubs Den – not least spoor identification, birdwatching, bug catching, African dance, and dung spitting!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
