OVERVIEW:
The hotel describes itself as contemporary with ‘an artful mix of classic beach house style and quirky opulence’ and it is one of the most luxurious places to stay in Hermanus.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Birkenhead House sits on a cliff in the pretty little fishing town of Hermanus, one and a half hour’s drive from Cape Town.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT BIRKENHEAD HOUSE:
Its 11 double suites are extremely stylish, with some lovely antiques and original artworks. The bathrooms are spacious, with a magnificent Victorian bath as a centrepiece, twin vanity basins, and a walk-in shower.
Birkenhead Villa sits adjacent to Birkenhead House and is equally luxurious. It is particularly suitable for families, as along with four other double rooms, there is a superior/family room, which consists of two rooms joined together by a sliding door. The entire villa can be rented by one group to sleep either 10 or 12 people.
The food is particularly impressive, with a fusion of modern African, Asian, Cape and French influences. The service is also excellent, with friendly and knowledgeable staff – yet far from being formal, the hotel has a relaxing laidback atmosphere. There are two swimming pools and a particularly good spa.
ACTIVITIES AT BIRKENHEAD HOUSE:
- Birkenhead House is perfectly placed for whale watching, as the southern right whale comes to Walker Bay each May and remains until December.
- Guests can sit on the terrace and watch their antics. August is particularly special as that is birthing time and the mothers appear with their newborn calves.
- Not only are there two fabulous beaches within a 10-minute walk, but cycling, hiking, golf, riding, quad biking, sea kayaking and scuba diving are all available nearby.
- For those who feel really brave, there is even shark cage diving!
