"Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has for years been the go to entry-level accommodation option in this area. More recently Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel seems to be getting increasing numbers of happy clients at this price bracket; a tough choice between the two."

OVERVIEW:

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge belongs to the 3B Group of Hotels, which owns five unique properties in Rwanda and prides itself on being environmentally friendly and assisting the local community in any way possible. It is ideally situated for some great gorilla and monkey tracking! Highly recommended by YZ.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

It has a lovely location amid gardens surrounded by forest in the foothills of Mount Karisimbi, one of the Virunga Mountains. This area is home to one-third of the world’s mountain gorillas!

?ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MOUNTAIN GORILLA VIEW LODGE:

The communal facilities at Mountain Gorilla are housed within a generously proportioned stone, brick and tile building, with spectacular views across the gardens to the forest and the Virunga Mountains beyond. There is a large restaurant area with smart separate tables and upright chairs on a cheerful terracotta-colour floor. The walls are hung with interesting artefacts, lending an explorers style. The lounge has a similar vibe, with a few coffee tables and easy chairs. There is also a well-stocked bar, a delightful dining terrace and a fire pit area, all fantastic for relaxing and getting to know your fellow guests! The gardens are very well kept and perfect for taking a leisurely stroll between activities.

Mountain Gorilla’s guest accommodation comprises a grand total of 30 cottages, all spread out within the lodge’s grounds and connected to the main building via neat paths. All are constructed from brick and tile, with plastered walls inside. Furnishings include roomy twin beds, bedside tables, a comfy seating area with fireplace, and a handy kitchen area too, featuring tea- and coffee-making machine. Wood and charcoal for the fireplace is provided on request. The en-suite facilities consist of flush toilet, washbasin and shower.

**Please note that the shower floors are extremely slippery so do take care!**

ACTIVITIES AT MOUNTAIN GORILLA VIEW LODGE:

  • Activities from Mountain Gorilla focus, naturally, on tracking mountain gorilla, though guests also enjoy looking out for the golden monkey, an Old World species listed as endangered on the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Red List. The Virunga mountain range covers an area in excess of 8,000 sq. km and includes six active and three dormant volcanoes! It is thrilling to track the gorillas in their natural habitat of thick forest at such high altitudes.
  • During the 1960s, Volcanoes National Park was the base for primatologist Dian Fossey’s work, as recounted in the book and film Gorillas in the Mist, so there is an exciting connection to bear in mind.
  • Presently the park is home to ten habituated groups of gorillas, so although encounters cannot be guaranteed, the chances of coming across a group eating, sleeping or playing are pretty good!
  • Other wildlife in this region includes forest elephant, giant forest hog, bushbuck, bushpig, and approximately 200 species of bird. And guests keen to take in some culture will love taking part in a village visit and being entertained by local dancers at the lodge!
