"For those looking to escape the crowds and experience the simplicity of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, this small and intimate camp is an ideal option. It's worth noting, however, that if you're interested in visiting the famous Dead Vlei, it may be more convenient to pair your stay here with one of the more centrally located camps."

OVERVIEW:

Perched on a 250-metres-high dune, Wolwedans Dune Camp is a classic tented camp that appeals particularly to the adventurous. It has just six guest rooms and is located in the private Namibrand Nature Reserve in south-west Namibia, a scenic desert area, made up of red dunes, gravel plains, and granite mountains.

Please note that Dune Camp requires a minimum stay of two nights, and that it is open all year round. The owners accept children aged 7 and above. If you are travelling as a family with younger children, you could consider Dune Camp Private, which accepts children of all ages – there are more details below, in the Accommodation section.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Wolwedans Dunes Camp is located in the Namibrand Nature Reserve in southwest Namibia. Guests should not confuse this area with the huge dune fields at nearby Sossusvlei – it is far more sophisticated, subtle, and overall it gives a substantially quieter experience. Trips to Sossusvlei are not included in the rate and usually not encouraged – it’s over a 2-hour bumpy ride each way!

To get to Wolwedans Dune Camp, you’ll take a 1-hour charter flight from Windhoek or Swakopmund to the Wolwedans airstrip. From the Wolwedans airstrip, it is a 15-minute drive each way to Dunes Camp.

If you are driving here, it is a scenic 6- to 7-hour drive from either Windhoek or Swakopmund. Wolwedans also offers privately guided journeys from Windhoek in a closed 4×4.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WOLWEDANS DUNE CAMP:

The six guest tents are spacious and comfortable and are all raised up onto wooden platforms, maximising the great views. They are en-suite with indoor and outdoor bathrooms (but please note they do not have bathtubs). The rooms have twin or king-size beds and the outdoor deck allows for plenty of lounging around and safe sleep-outs under the stars. Each comes with a ‘Wolwedans Chiller’, a small water-filled silo (or tiny plunge pool) for the hotter months.
The main mess area is made up of a series of interlocking decks that encompass a lounge, a dining area, and a tea room, all with views of the endless dunes. The tents are all designed for the desert, for example the canvas sides can be opened up to capture the cooling breeze in summer months. Meals are communally taken on a shared table, and evenings can be spent sharing stories around the fire-pit.

Dune Camp Private is located a short walk from the main area of Dune Camp, and offers two en-suite tented rooms and a shared main space. As a tented villa, it is ideal for families with a maximum of four adults and two children. This unit includes a private chef and guide; it also has a small private lounge and dining area plus outside bathrooms, a sleep-out deck, and two ‘Wolwedans Chillers’.

*Please be aware that the swimming pool (Wolwedans Chiller) here has no depth markings, so take care before you jump in.

ACTIVITIES AT WOLWEDANS DUNE CAMP:

Activities at Wolwedans are based on exploring the private reserve by vehicle and also on foot. The area offers the best game driving in the region, though even this area is not comparable to the likes of Etosha.

  • Scenic drives

    - Explore the vast plains, mountains, and sand dunes of the NamibRand reserve with an expertly guided scenic drive. Your guide will teach you about the large and small desert dwellers, as well as helping you to discover the diverse flora that can be incredibly resilient.
  • Late afternoon sundowner drives

    - Every day, you’ll have the opportunity to gather at a scenic spot to bid farewell to the day. Sometimes this will be on one of the sundowner decks, and other times it’ll be on a sand dune.
  • Dune surfing on fat e-bikes

    - Glide up and along the amazing sand dunes, or follow the winding roads through the reserve over hills and vast plains. You can also cycle towards a little desert picnic spot or just down to the village.
  • Horse-riding

    - You can book a horse-riding session and watch the landscape from a different perspective. Additional cost, to be booked in advance.
  • Hot air balloon flights

    - This activity comes at an additional cost, but we think the expense is well worth it. Boarding a balloon shortly before dawn, you’ll be suspended above the Namibrand, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the dune landscape. Additional cost, so please book in advance.

**This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course
