The Stiltz is a fascinating guesthouse built on the edge of Swakopmund overlooking the estuary of the Swakop River.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
With the exception of the reception area, the entire property is built on stilts, 3.5 metres above the reed riverbed.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
A network of boardwalks connect the first building, the bright and cheery breakfast room, to the nine wooden bungalows, and two villas which sleep up to 6 people. They are all thatched, have a bathroom with a large shower, and a small private balcony with a view of the dunes, the lagoon or the Atlantic Ocean. The interiors are brightly decorated with colourful curtains, bedspreads and cushions, while unconventional fittings add a quirky touch.
There is no lounge, but the breakfast room is a pleasant place where guests can enjoy the views and watch the birds while they eat. Dinner is not served here, so guests have to go into town in the evenings, however the friendly and efficient staff at reception are happy to recommend and book local restaurants.
Although the guesthouse feels remote, it has the added advantage of being within walking distance of the attractive town centre with its shops, bars and restaurants. However, take note – it is the most interesting accommodation to be found in the area so availability can be a problem.
