OVERVIEW:
It is owned by the park's authority and was built to be environmentally friendly in every way. It makes a very good base for visiting the dunes.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Opened in 2007, Sossus Dune Lodge is the only lodge in the Namib-Naukluft Park.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SOSSUS DUNE LODGE:
Its 25 luxury "chalets" are spread out across the valley and joined together by a wooden walkway. They are made of canvas with thatched roofs and wooden frames. The interiors are African colonial style, using a combination of leather and wood, whereas the bathrooms are more contemporary, each with a flushing toilet, shower and wash-basin. They all have stunning views as one wall is made entirely of glass. Thirteen look out onto the dunes, while the remaining twelve face the mountain and canyon.
ACTIVITIES AT SOSSUS DUNE LODGE:
Where this lodge really stands out is its location. It is the only lodge inside the park so, unlike those who are staying elsewhere, guests are able to enjoy the contrasting colours and moods of the dunes both at dawn and sunset – a fantastic experience.
However, we do have a couple of reservations about Dune Lodge. It is larger than most others in the area so seems much less personal. We have also been told that the service is not always as good as one would expect at a hotel of this standard.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course
