Onguma Tree Top Camp is perfect for travellers seeking authentic safari accommodation from which to explore a couple of very wildlife-rich parts of the world. The reserve is situated just outside Etosha, so the camp is able to offer activities in Onguma and in the national park. As the walkways are not fenced on both sides, and as wild animals are often in the area, the camp does not accept youngsters under the age of 12 years. Families with older children are welcome, and the property is also suitable for solos, couples, honeymooners, and a group of friends.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The camp is accessed via road transfer from the Onguma & Mokuti airstrip. In addition to the plus point of its woodland surrounds, it is very close to a large waterhole, providing excellent wildlife watching from the communal lodge and the guest tents! A neat gravel path flanked by small rocks leads to the lodge with its flight of steps onto the main level.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
Built from stone, wood, and thatch, it has a very authentic appearance. Inside, the design is open plan, lending a classic mess tent feel. The lounge area has comfortable seating around a coffee table, as well as a cosy fireplace. The dining space has one large table and a couple of smaller tables, both flanked by wood-and-canvas director’s chairs. To the side of the dining space is the bar, constructed from more wood so you really feel part of the landscape! The décor throughout is neutral with a few splashes of colour and the views out to the woods and waterhole are breathtakingly good. Guests can sit on the viewing deck, having a drink and enjoying the scenery. The fire pit is great for gatherings at sunset, enticing travellers to come together and share those safari tales!
There are just four guest tents at Onguma Tree Top Camp, all connected to the lodge by those exciting raised walkways. The tents are made from wood, canvas, and thatch, maintaining the authentic vibe. The décor is, again, mostly neutrals, with a few accents of green. Guests even have the option of rolling open the canvas on one side, so you can listen to the sounds of the bush at night time! During the day, a private veranda is the perfect place to sit and observe passing wildlife. This area flows though into the bedroom, which contains a double bed, seating at the foot of the bed, bedside tables, wall lighting, shelving, a safe, mosquito netting, a horn for emergencies, and a standing fan. The en-suite facilities are situated to one side of the tent and comprise toilet, washbasin unit, and lovely open-air shower. There is also a hairdryer.
The camp is well placed to offer some classic safari activities, in both the reserve and Etosha National Park. Game drives take place in morning and afternoon in both areas, and in the evening within the reserve. Etosha boasts very impressive concentrations of wildlife! All Big Five are in residence throughout the year, as are a plethora of other predators and herbivores – cheetah, hyena, serval, caracal, wild cat, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, springbok, gemsbok, eland. The birdlife is equally amazing, with highlights such as tawny eagle, secretary bird, ostrich, and laughing dove. A game drive in Onguma, whether during the day or at night, is also a very wildlife-rich experience. And guests can enjoy walking safaris in the reserve too, providing opportunities to check out all the small things that you tend to miss while travelling in the 4 by 4! There really is a lot to see here.
