Omaanda is a super-luxurious lodge in a reserve not far from Windhoek! It’s great for a minimum two-night stay in the region, but please note that, although the activities are very good, they’re not a substitute for a traditional Namibia safari.
The deluxe Omaanda is listed in the portfolio of the Zannier Hotels Group, which includes properties in France, Belgium, and Cambodia, as well as in Namibia. Zannier has a few celebrity links, not least in Omaanda’s provision of activities within the Shiloh Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a joint venture between the N/a’an ku sê and Jolie–Pitt foundations. The accommodation at Omaanda is booked on a full-board basis, featuring all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and a laundry service. The property is open all year round.
Access & location:
The property is accessed via approximately 25 kilometres’ road transfer from Windhoek’s international airport. It’s situated north-east of the city, within Zannier Reserve (now known as Zannier Reserve by N/a’an ku sê).
Accommodation & facilities at Omaanda:
There are ten one- or two-bedroom huts. All are constructed from timber and thatch, and mounted on a smart stone plinth. Every one-bedroom hut occupies 80 square metres of floor space and accommodates a maximum of two adults and one child. Each offers a king-size bed or twin beds with mosquito netting, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, and a pleasant seating area. There’s also a spacious walk-in dressing room! The palette is made up of earthy tones, quite striking alongside the white textured walls. Additional amenities include air conditioning, a flatscreen television, a sound bar with Bluetooth connectivity and Wi-Fi, a Nespresso machine, an electric kettle, a mini-bar, a laptop-size safe, and a hairdryer. The en-suite washroom contains a separate flush toilet, twin washbasins, a walk-in shower, and a bathtub with a lovely view over Zannier Reserve. Free toiletries are supplied. Every two-bedroom hut measures 146 square metres and sleeps up to four adults and two children. Both bedrooms have en-suite facilities, as well as all the amenities of the smaller unit. And all huts also have a private terrace, where you can relax and enjoy those breathtaking views!
The communal facilities at Omaanda are very well presented. The restaurant, Ambo Delights, provides delicious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, using fresh ingredients where possible. The space features an immense open fire, at which the talented Belgian chef Annelie Maes and her team may be viewed preparing your meals! The property’s lounge bar offers a thrilling range of juices, cocktails, fine wines, and vintage liqueurs, and it includes a cosy boma complete with fireplace, where you can relax at the end of each day. Staff at the pool bar serve up drinks on the deck, in between your dips into the heated swimming pool to refresh and to marvel at views over Zannier! If you’re in need of a little retail therapy during your stay, you need only pop to Omaanda’s boutique, which stocks souvenirs, furniture, and fashion. And for the ultimate pampering session, there’s the spa, as well as opportunities for yoga.
Activities at Omaanda:
Omaanda offers an exciting variety of activities, as follows:
Expertly guided game drives- Zannier Reserve covers 9,600 hectares of savanna, woodlands, and water sources. Drives are available during early morning and evening. Among the reserve’s wildlife highlights are rhino, leopard, and elephant (three of the Big Five), in addition to cheetah, black-backed jackal, giraffe, warthog, antelopes such as kudu, red hartebeest, steenbok, and springbok, and an impressive assortment of birds, including the enormous ostrich! And throughout the drive, your guide will provide some interesting information about conservation endeavours within the reserve.
Private savanna watch- This is a private tour, for one to six safarists. You’ll enjoy exclusive experiences of the reserve, as well as specially selected snacks and drinks.
Rhino tracking- Please note, for health and safety reasons, all tracking activities have a minimum age requirement of 16 years. While tracking rhino through the reserve, you’ll learn everything there is to know about the species from your knowledgeable guide.
Elephant tracking- Tracking the grey guys is fascinating too! Presently there are just two eles in Zannier, both from a herd located in the north-eastern region of Namibia. This herd’s size became too large for its habitat, and the N/a’an ku sê Foundation offered to re-home a couple of bulls.
Carnivore tracking- This activity focuses on following leopard and cheetah. It’s a must for big cat fans!
Meerkat manners experience- The reserve is home to a number of meerkat colonies. The experience involves setting off to see the cheeky chaps at sunrise, in time to observe their morning routine. One of the most engaging mammal species on Earth, meerkat provide plenty of entertainment!
Wildlife sanctuary visits- Private tours of the Shiloh Wildlife Sanctuary are highly recommended for anyone interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the excellent work being carried out here. You’ll meet the vets responsible for looking after the wildlife, and you can even take part in walks with baboons and cheetahs! You can also visit the Clever Cubs School and the anti-poaching unit.
