Kwessi Dune Lodge

When To Visit Namibia:
left arrow image right arrow image
“This lodge hasn’t opened yet, but we know the company behind the property well and expect the quality of the camp to be high. That said, its location looks remote and arguably a bit far away from the action.”

Scheduled to open on 1st March 2020, Kwessi Dune Lodge looks like a well-presented and well-run option within the highly scenic NamibRand Nature Reserve! However, for some travellers, it might prove a bit too far from the key sights of Sossusvlei.

Kwessi Dune Lodge is owned and operated by Natural Selection. It’s the company’s sixth property to open in Namibia, within a portfolio that features Botswana and South Africa as well. A conservation-driven tourism organisation, Natural Selection is also committed to minimising its footprint, all the while ensuring that guests enjoy a top-quality safari! Accommodation at Kwessi Dune Lodge will be booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, most activities (please see our Activities section below), and a laundry service. The lodge will be open from 1st March to 31st December 2020 and subsequently all year round.

Access & location:

The lodge will be accessed via a short road transfer from its private airstrip within the NamibRand Nature Reserve. It’s situated within a private concession covering 15,000 hectares.

Accommodation & facilities at Kwessi Dune Lodge:

There will be just ten chalets, all positioned on the desert plains amidst rising red dunes and majestic mountains. The artist’s image shows that each will have a few wooden steps up onto a private veranda, which will offer a couple of chairs, a table, a hammock, and breathtaking views over the NamibRand Nature Reserve! Guests will enter the chalet through timber-framed glass doors, finding themselves in a pleasantly airy space thanks to the high thatch roof of the building. The bedroom will contain a vintage four-poster bed, bedside cabinets and lighting, a couple of luggage racks, a drinks stand, and perhaps a writing desk and chair too. Natural Selection describes the style as the company’s ‘usual cool and comfortable’, adding that there’ll be ‘a few quirks along the way’ – and we particularly like the smart striped canvas walls, artwork, and plant life. The en-suite facilities will include both indoor and outdoor showers. There’ll also be an adjoining ‘star gazer’ room, where guests will be able to drift off under the clear night skies of the NamibRand. And access for disabled travellers is possible on request.

The communal spaces at Kwessi Dune Lodge are also shown in the artist’s collection of images. In common with the guest chalets, this main building will feature wooden steps up onto a deck and a neatly thatched roof, but it’ll be open sided for the most part. Inside, there’ll be a medley of sofas, armchairs, and pouffes around coffee tables, a few chic tables-and-chairs for indoor dining, an array of bookcases making up the property’s library, and a well-stocked bar. The deck will provide a nice venue for al fresco relaxing and dining, while guests marvel at the views! The campfire will be set up just outside the lodge, while the swimming pool will be to one side – we’ll update all these details once we’ve visited the lodge next year.

Activities at Kwessi Dune Lodge:

Kwessi Dune Lodge will offer an exhilarating range of things to do! Please note, activities incurring an additional charge are indicated with an asterisk (*) below.

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - These will be available during mornings and afternoons. Guests will be invited to explore not only the lodge’s private concession but also all 200,000 hectares of the NamibRand Nature Reserve! The landscape is absolutely stunning, and you’ll have a great time searching for some of the area’s wildlife, not least an assortment of big and small cats, black-backed jackals, Burchell’s zebra, kudu, and a lot of boks – gemsbok, springbok, steenbok.
  • Nature walks

    - Perfect for anyone interested in scrutinising the smaller lives of the reserve, walks will also be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. They’ll provide exciting opportunities to look at birds and insects, for example.
  • Skybeds experience and stargazing

    - Adventurous travellers can opt to spend a night in the desert. You’ll have some magical moments gazing up at the night sky and listening to the nocturnal wildlife.
  • Quad biking

    - This is a thrilling way to explore the reserve, from the vast sweeping plains to the imposing mountains!
  • Day trips to the Sossusvlei dunes*

    - Considered Namibia’s most iconic region, Sossusvlei is well worth visiting during your stay. Some of the dunes are as tall as skyscrapers! You can read more about Sossusvlei here.
  • Hot air ballooning*

    - For a bird’s-eye view over Sossusvlei, staff at Kwessi Dune will arrange a hot air balloon ride for you, another very memorable add-on to your holiday.
  • Horse riding*

    - Why not see it all from the saddle too? Again, the lodge’s staff will happily organise horse riding for you.
  • Scenic helicopter flights*

    - Taking in vast swathes of the NamibRand Reserve, a helicopter flight is guaranteed to leave you with some amazing memories. For more information about this experience, and anything else to do with Kwessi Dune Lodge, please get in touch with a member of our team.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
