Fish River Lodge provides all the comforts of home and the opportunity to experience some of the most breathtaking views on the planet! A stay here makes for a very worthwhile trip indeed.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Fish River Lodge is the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
The Lodge’s main building is generously proportioned, made from glass and brick with large windows. Wooden decking and furniture provide a contrast with this style, yielding an interesting mix of old and new. The airy lounge area is bright and surrounded by windows, so guests can make the most of the spectacular views from this high vantage point. There is a fire in the centre of the room for those cooler nights, making the lounge very cosy! Head out onto the veranda and you will find the decking area, plenty of seating, and a cool swimming pool, wonderful for relaxing after a long day. There is a bar in the dining area – as this contains individual tables for meals, you have a feeling of intimacy as the sun goes down and chandelier lighting twinkles. The designers have managed to combine luxury and the gorgeous natural setting, which is there waiting for you, from sunrise to sunset.
The 20 individual cottages at Fish River Lodge are perfectly placed for guests to enjoy the outstanding views here. All are spacious and modern, with large glass doors. The décor is clean and neutral with modern touches here and there, including crisp white linens. The double beds are big and comfortable – and they can be set up as twins, if you prefer. Much of the furniture is locally made, creating a lovely mix of modern and traditional styling. The en-suite bathrooms have double basins, a shower and a toilet. There is also a private outdoor shower, so you can shower with a view! The big draw of these cottages without doubt is their vistas across the canyon below. Every effort has been made to make sure that you can see the canyon from wherever you are in the cottage, even in bed. There is also a veranda area and plenty of seating for you to sink into at the end of the day. There is something almost magical about sipping on your favourite drink as you watch the sunset over the majestic landscape.
Understandably, activities offered at Fish River Lodge are based around the land and its inhabitants. Take a vehicle safari down into the canyon and you will be able to have a swim in the pools there – be sure to take a picnic, so you do not have to hurry back! Take a sundowner safari on the upper levels of the canyon and keep an eye out for the local wildlife, such as chacma baboon, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, kudu, springbok, ostrich and orxy – and you may have a chance to see the elusive leopard! There is also plenty of birdlife for ornithologists, including the black eagle. You can walk down into the canyon too, though the terrain can be a little tough for beginners. If you fancy a night or two camping under the stars, you can hire a guide and tents and spend an extra day or two exploring this amazing part of the world!
