If you want an active stay in Namibia, including being close to nature and taking in some astonishing sights, YZ recommends Erongo Wilderness Lodge!

Erongo Wilderness Lodge has something for everyone, whether you are an inquisitive child or an active adult. The Lodge welcomes children of all ages – there is a playground area for them, and a cot can be requested if need be. You will need to keep a close eye on the youngsters, though, as the chalets are surrounded by a steep rocky climb.

Erongo Wilderness Lodge is tucked away in the rugged Erongo Mountains, a natural reserve within a vast volcanic crater, and forms part of the 200,000 hectare Erongo Mountain Nature Conservancy.

Walk up a flight of natural stone steps and you will find the main area, which sits atop a hill that is separate from the chalets. The restaurant and lounge are open plan and built from stone and thatch, perfectly complementing their surroundings. One side is without a full wall, giving you marvellous views of the landscape. Relax in one of the leather chairs and choose a book to read from Erongo’s small selection… cosy up to the central fireplace on those cooler nights… or sit at the bar and indulge in your favourite tipple! Overlooking a floodlit watering hole, the Lodge provides ample opportunities for you to spot the animals that come to drink there. Do not be surprised if you are joined by a porcupine or two! There is also an outdoor seating area, perfectly placed for you to watch those African sunsets. After a long, hot day, you can take a swim in the natural-style pool to cool off.

Erongo’s guest accommodation is accessible via a walk up wooden decking, following the paths around to the ten comfortable tented chalets raised on stilts and presenting superb vistas. As the chalets are nestled among the boulders on the side of the mountain, there is plenty of seclusion and privacy. All are beautifully lit – and you can ignore the rest of the world as you snooze the night away. While the décor is simple, it is very elegant, reflecting the colours of nature in white, gold and brown. Enter the en-suite bathroom at the back and you really get a sense of nature as you bathe in a shower that is built into the side of existing rocks and trees. Step out onto your private veranda and you can see the splendour of the mountain around you. A stay here supplies luxury within a lovely natural setting – and watching the sun set over the mountain beyond is something very special! NB: For families with young children, we always request family tent or tents 1 and 7 for safety reasons, as some tents are on raised decks. If you stay here with us, please ensure this is what you are given.

  • Erongo’s activities mainly involve walking – this means that you get to explore this amazing part of the world in great detail! Take one of the lodge’s knowledgeable guides and you are sure to see some unforgettable sights. The guided morning walks last from one to four hours, but if you choose to go alone, then you can set your own pace, following one of the marked walking trails.
  • If you would like a more relaxed tour of the area, take the afternoon nature drive – this lasts around three hours and you have the chance to see oryx, steenbok, kudu, klipspringer, warthog and Hartmann’s mountain zebra!
  • The drive also takes you to visit Paula’s Cave, which houses some interesting bushman rock art.
  • If you are into bird watching, then you will enjoy spying species including the rosy-faced lovebird and white-tailed shrike – and if you are lucky, you could even see the freckled nightjar nesting! It really is difficult to get bored in this fascinating part of Africa.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course
